Alex Otey embraces an old-school feel-good funk with “Back to Feeling Fine”. Everything about the track radiates a degree of hope. Full of optimism the song has a hearty sound to it one truly inspirational. Instrumental variety reigns supreme from the dusty organ to the fantastic bass work all the way to the loose drums. The bass here is played with an emotional hue to it going deep into those fantastic 70s idioms, for it has a driving presence alongside a nice dub-like affect to it. By far though the true highlight emerges out of the vocals. Here the lyrics further add to the sense of beauty, one that celebrates the individual. The sort of thing that truly touches the soul it deserves to be played as loudly as possible.
Wasting no time, the song dives right into the middle of things. Careening wildly there is a sense of life that helps to propel things forward. His intense focus proves to be essential for it really does draw the listener into his own peculiar musical language. Melodically rich the many layers intersect to create this vivid dreamlike state. Almost psychedelic in certain moments, thanks in large part to the acid-soaked guitar riffs, the song seemingly rises up into the sky. A strong sense of togetherness keeps things intact for the song works itself into a pure frenzy for the frantic finale.
“Back to Feeling Fine” shows off Alex Otey’s ability to tap into the past’s classic moments while creating something that speaks to this very moment.
