Interview: Janora Brown Talks Faith, Fame, and Finding Her Voice After The Voice
From college biology labs to performing in front of Kelly Clarkson and John Legend, Janora Brown is no stranger to evolution. The rising R&B vocalist, whose voice first turned heads on The Voice and American Idol, is now fully stepping into her own light — with a message of faith, soul, and fearless artistry.
Born in Florence, SC and raised in the quiet town of Wingate, NC (population: small, dreams: massive), Janora’s musical journey began in the church, singing with her mom at just three years old. Her rich gospel roots remain the foundation of her signature sound — a soulful, emotive blend of R&B and spiritual depth that cuts straight to the heart.
Now based in Charlotte and hard at work on a full-length project, Janora’s latest single “Reel Me Back In” is a deeply personal offering that showcases her powerhouse vocals and pen that speaks from the soul.
Exposed Vocals caught up with Janora for an exclusive interview to talk about her journey, lessons from the spotlight, and what fans can expect next.
INTERVIEW
Exposed Vocals: From The Voice to American Idol, you’ve wowed national audiences. How did those experiences shape your confidence and artistry today?
Janora Brown: Those experiences shifted my mindset on believing anything is possible. With dedication and hard work, the unthinkable is obtainable. I never thought I would “wow national audiences” or be able to truly live out my dreams. But with God, all things are possible. Those experiences increased my confidence, knocked down my self-inflicted limitations, and propelled me into becoming a better artist.
Exposed Vocals: Your new single “Reel Me Back In” feels deeply personal. What inspired this track, and what do you hope listeners take away from it?
Janora Brown: “Reel Me Back In” is a song I believe everyone can relate to. Sometimes we lose our way or get distracted by life’s challenges and forget who’s truly in control. I wanted listeners to acknowledge that they may be drifting from God and know that no matter how far you are, He can always reel you back in.
Exposed Vocals: You grew up singing in church with your mom. How has your gospel background influenced your R&B music?
Janora Brown: Gospel will always be my roots! My mom always told me I had a soulful voice. In church, singing always brought a wave of emotions — for me and the congregation. That power to move people isn’t limited to gospel alone. When I sing R&B, it’s with that same intention — to touch hearts and stir souls.
Exposed Vocals: You studied biology and considered a career in dentistry. What was the turning point when you said, ‘No, music is it’?
Janora Brown: Music was always in my veins, even during college. My parents encouraged me to get a degree, and I did — but after graduation, I followed my passion and auditioned for The Voice. Once I got that yes, I never looked back.
Exposed Vocals: Both Kelly Clarkson and John Legend showed you love on The Voice — what did their mentorship mean to you?
Janora Brown: There were only 48 contestants on The Voice that season, and I got the 2nd to last spot. All the coaches told me I would’ve been a four-chair turn. Though I initially wanted Ariana Grande, having John Legend as a coach was a dream. He’s a legend, literally. Kelly is amazing too — I often wonder what might’ve happened if I chose her. Their support meant the world to me.
Exposed Vocals: Your music explores heartbreak, healing, and self-love. How do you channel those emotions into your songwriting?
Janora Brown: Writing is therapy for me. I tap into my own emotions — what I felt, what it reminds me of — and I write it down. I want my listeners not just to hear the song, but to feel and visualize it.
Exposed Vocals: Coming from a small town like Wingate, what does it mean to represent your hometown on such a big stage?
Janora Brown: Wingate has two traffic lights — it’s tiny! But the love I’ve received is huge. Representing my hometown on national TV gave people hope. It made them feel seen. I’ll always hold that close.
Exposed Vocals: You’ve opened for legends like After 7. What has been a standout performance moment for you?
Janora Brown: Performing on The Dorinda Clark Show is one of my most memorable moments. I was so nervous, but once I started singing “Hold On,” the Holy Spirit took over. It felt like the first time I truly fell in love with the stage.
Exposed Vocals: You’ve built a strong online following. How has social media shaped your music career?
Janora Brown: Social media used to terrify me — I didn’t like being vulnerable in front of strangers. But now, I love it. It helps me connect, grow, and inspire. The messages I get daily from fans telling me how much my videos mean to them — that’s what keeps me going.
Exposed Vocals: What can fans expect next? Is there a full project coming?
Janora Brown: Absolutely! Expect more R&B songs, music videos, performances — and yes, a full project. Plus, get ready to see me on another major TV show early in 2026!
