Exposed Vocals just caught an exclusive with Héllena

Greek born Singer/Songwriter Héllena (formerly Helena Micy) decided to take a leap of faith and moved to the UK in 2011 to work with MTV award-winning producer Stereo Mike.

Héllena made it into the MTV Unsigned Top 20 and gained 6 Gold awards on BEAT100 for “Don’t Change” and “Dream Big”. In March 2013 she performed at SXSW festival and by early 2014 she reached No1 in ReverbNation’s Soul/Pop UK charts. She also appeared on Simon Lederman’s BBC London 94,9 fm show in 2014. Héllena is building a strong online fanbase and performing live with her band across the UK.
Her latest Single “Now I see” was released May 13th, 2016.

Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?

 

Héllena: I grew up in a really small and cool place at the base of mountain Olympus. My love for music started at a young age and when I listened to Metal and Rock music in my adolescence for the first time, it triggered something in me. Suddenly a new world appeared. Revelation I call it.

 

Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?

 

Héllena: It’s my name. I just added another L just because it’s more…Hellenic 🙂

Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?

 

Héllena: Yes I do it all the time for people who subscribe to my newsletter. I think giving your music away for free is a wise choice at least when you’re an up and coming Artist. You never make money in the beginning anyway so you better build up a name for yourself first. Free music sharing helps with that.

 

Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?

 

Héllena: I don’t have a usual songwriting process but most of the times a melody pops in my head and then I work on it further with my guitar or on my piano. I get inspiration from everything, the books I read, the music I listen to, what I see around me, everything.

Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?

 

Héllena: www.hellenaofficial.com is my website. Usually I use Soundcloud to upload the music and then share it on social platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?

 

Héllena: Record an album, release/promote it, tour the world, write a hell lot of songs on my time off and donate some of the money away for good causes.

Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?

 

Héllena: Facebook and Twitter work quite well for me I suppose. I don’t do much for promotion other than keeping in touch and updating the fans.

Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?

 

Héllena: Yes so much is going on! I am releasing a cover song in September (surpriiiise) which will introduce the new sound I’m gonna go for with my upcoming EP. The EP is going to be comprised with 4 songs I suppose and I am working on the arrangements at the moment. So excited!

Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?

 

Héllena: Hmmmmm I don’t know. Maybe I would be a dancer or a film director. Something that has to do with creativity I guess.

Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?

 

Héllena: I used to feel like juggling but not anymore. I just try to enjoy every second of my life. It’s very liberating.

Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?

Héllena: New music with a new sound. 🙂
