Exposed Vocals Interviews Mardou
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Mardou: In Belo Horizonte, MG – Brazil. I never decided to be an artist, what I do since I was young is to interpret the world and the things in the most essential and sensitive manner. This gives me different ways to experience life and create from it, my compositions. I decided to forever, yes, seek my truths and know me as much as possible, even if it brings me difficult moments in life. I decided to write, and then compose, when I realized that my loneliness was screaming voice, that the pain would be at least ameliorated by sincere words. But also, when I realized I could express feelings and thoughts that many others shared, unable to reach the word.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Mardou: The name comes from a book by Jack Kerouac called “The Subterraneans”. I was reading this book at a time in my life I have had unstable relationship experiences, as well as thoughts and feelings, poetic and philosophical, these experiences that, in its way, resembled the portrayed by the main character in the book.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Mardou: The online sharing of music is the most universal way of distributing the musical art has achieved. This makes sounds from various places arrive in several other places, almost communally, thus distributing the various ways of interpreting the world and make music. Our first EP was fully available for free on the Internet by soundcloud. We did it because, besides being our first job and be easier to make people listen via a free sharing, we think this is the future, if not already the present, of music.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Mardou: Always seek their essence, their truths. Either in the composition, either in the arrangements. Thus a producer of art, consequently, an artist, even being one of the most difficult roads to go.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Mardou: I have no exact rules for the composition. I compose on the bus, in the classroom, at work, in the bathroom. Whenever hit some thought and I want to create verses about it. Usually the songs come out when I’m in my solitude, seeking directions to the seizure of thoughts and feelings that pass me by.

Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
Mardou: Travel to all possible places to meet all cultures of the most varied and live as much as possible with them. Learn about their lives and the ways they interpret life, the world. Know their culture, their art, their style of playing with life.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Mardou: Generally social media is the means of more access. On facebook we can get feedback from media played and opinions of the fans.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Mardou: We are working on a new sound, new lyrics. We thought to include electronic elements, and keyboard in our new songs, daring a little and go for the experimental side.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Mardou: I’m dead. I’ m dead man.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
Mardou: I’m always listening to new music and composing in my day-to-day. With that I reach a lot of ideas about my creation. I do this in the empty spaces of the day, I try to do what I like, read and work on what I consider to be consistent with what I think. And that facilitates the musical experience.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
Mardou: They can expect dedication in new arrangements and lyrics, what they can’t expect is what lies ahead, as we seek to be a little different
