Sean “Diddy” Combs Pleads Not Guilty to Federal Charges; Bail Denied
One day after being arrested and indicted on sweeping federal charges, music and business mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs appeared in a Manhattan federal courtroom on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, where he entered a plea of not guilty to all counts, including sex trafficking, racketeering, and transporting individuals across state lines for illegal sexual activity.
During a tense and closely watched arraignment hearing in the Southern District of New York, federal prosecutors laid out the broad strokes of the case, accusing Combs of orchestrating a decades-long network that exploited women and underage girls for sex through coercion, drugs, and violence. Prosecutors argued that Combs was a flight risk and posed a potential threat to witnesses in the case.
“The defendant used his fame, fortune, and influence to build a system of control and abuse — one that reached across state lines and relied on fear, manipulation, and financial coercion,” the lead prosecutor told the court.
Citing the seriousness of the charges and the potential for witness tampering, U.S. Magistrate Judge Valerie Reyes denied bail, ordering Combs to remain in federal custody pending trial. The courtroom — packed with media, attorneys, and onlookers — remained silent as the ruling was read. Combs, dressed in a dark suit and flanked by his legal team, showed little emotion as he was remanded.
Outside the courthouse, his attorney Benjamin Brafman reiterated Combs’s innocence in a defiant statement: “Mr. Combs has pleaded not guilty because he is not guilty. We will challenge every aspect of this case in court and expect full exoneration. He is being scapegoated by a media-driven campaign and opportunists seeking personal gain.”
Combs’s legal team also signaled their intent to file a motion for reconsideration of bail in the coming days, claiming the prosecution’s portrayal of the artist as a flight risk is “absurd” given his public status and willingness to cooperate with authorities prior to the arrest.
Meanwhile, federal prosecutors emphasized the strength of their case, which reportedly includes seized electronic communications, financial records, video evidence, and the cooperation of multiple witnesses and alleged victims.
The next court date has been set for October 15, 2024, for a pretrial hearing. If convicted on all charges, Combs could face decades in federal prison.
