Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?

Young Ace: I grew up on north side of St. Louis, Missouri. Its a rough area. Lots of violence and crimes. I stayed in that area until I hit middle school. Moved to north county. I stayed in Atlanta for a while too. I decided to become an artist because I love what music does to people. It’s like a book you can get lost in. I can touch people all over the world with my songs and that’s dope to me. I remember the effect music had on my life and I fell in love with it.

 

Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?

 

Young Ace: I came up with Young Ace because I was young when I started writing and Paid In Full is one of my favorite movies. That’s where the Ace comes from. And a couple of the homies used to say I remind them of Ace from the movie so I kind of ran with the idea.

Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?

 

Young Ace: Well right now I think online music sharing is ok. I only really use soundcloud and datpiff. You know sites like that. All the music I’ve released so far has been free. I’ve just been trying to build up my buzz and fan base. They say the best things in life are free so I try to keep my supporters happy with giving them good music for free.

Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?

Young Ace: Yeah. Always work on you craft. You can always improve yourself. Branch out and network with fans, promoters, other artist. People be quick to hate on other artist. It could possibly be from fear. Fear that they’ll never reach the height of the next artist. I’m not saying you can’t be competitive because I do believe rap is like a sport. I’m saying teamwork makes the dream work. Everybody can eat out here. The sooner everyone realizes that the better. Always have faith and confidence in yourself and your work.

 

Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?

 

Young Ace: I get inspired by everything to be honest. I usually get inspired by things in my life and the situations I’ve been through. My family as well. My life in general really. My process is usually the same as always. Think of a subject and tell the best story I can. I always look for a good topic. My beats help a lot as well. I usually make a lot of songs early in the morning like 2 or 3.

Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?

Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?

 

Young Ace: I would be working on my music and figuring out a way to increase my money. I would spend it on a new car and a new place. The rest would be for music purposes only. A year off sounds nice but I got a family depending on me so I’m just grinding.

Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?

 

Young Ace: Wors of mouth has done wonders for me. Social media as well. Networking at shows and festivals or just anywhere to be honest is the easiest to get people to become supporters. They feel involved and are more interested.

Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?

 

Young Ace: I’m working on getting videos done. I need visuals to go with my tracks. A few endorsements. My next project is “Lost Values” I’m going to release is soon. No scheduled date has been set but I’m real close to being finished with all the tracks. Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?

 

Young Ace: If I wasn’t making music I probably would be playing basketball. My first love was ball. Still play it to this day. I’d be a lot of things actually. I still plan on doing some of those things.

Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?

 

Young Ace: I’m so focused right now. My family and friends motivate me to do better. I have goals and plans and dreams I have to fulfill and I won’t stop until I do.

Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?

 

Young Ace: Fans should be on the lookout for a bunch of dope music. Maybe a clothing line as well. They need to be ready to see a young artist grinding to the fullest.
