Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become Mama Julz
I grew up in a small country town in New Zealand. I’ve always sung for as long as I can remember and as I grew older the music became more than just singing, it became Mama Julz and my message of positive light and energy to anyone who needs to talk a walk on the bright side of life
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
The Mama Julz name came from my children’s close friends who used to come over to our home on a regular basis. One day one them said, what shall I call you? And I said, you can call me whatever you want! To which they said ok I’m gonna call you Mama Julz! It made me feel very special and ever since it has been my name and I wear it proudly and it is my brand
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Yes I allow my music to go out for free, why? I want people to hear it and enjoy it and get the message of what I want to share out. I also want to earn a good living from it and I’m a great believer in getting back what you give out, so for me, the income will come in its due time and season.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
The best advice that I can truly give anyone starting out is this: You are responsible for the gift or talent you have been given. The best thing you can do is to believe in yourself 100% that you got something of great significance. You need to then find out who is your type of audience? What’s your message and goal? Then go seek out those pubs, or cafes, radio or local businesses and put your music in front of them. Like and like attract, it’s simple but it works build your own audience, don’t wait for others to d what you know you can do today
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Everything I write about has been by the book lived experience. I usually get inspiration from the not so good things that have happened to me. I write my best lyrics when it’s in the very early hours of the morning. I will take that experience and write from the exact opposite of how it made me feel. So if I’m sad or low I write about how better I am after the problem has been solved. For the words and music just flow and I begin to heal and feel good again. We are responsible for our own happiness and light! My two hashtag sayings are this #mamalight #shinebright

Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
OMG that’s such a good question! Firstly I would set a wage for myself to keep me accountable to do what I need to do. Then I would hire my producer Lee Bradshaw for six months so that we could sit down and roll out some unbelievable music without any interruptions. Thirdly I would allow 4 days in each month to spend quality time with the people that have always believed in my talent and allow them to also challenge me in keeping to the goal of completion.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
I can’t say this enough, network, network, and network. Get out and about and always have your cards ready to give to anyone who may ask what it is that you do for a living. This is what works best for me, be positive and happy and it shines out of you and people automatically are drawn to that presence of brightness. They want to know about you and what makes you tick
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
At the moment I want to do my next video of our new song using family and friends from around the world and putting it together as a whole video. The purpose is to show in the song that no matter where we all live and no matter what happens in life, everything is going to be Alright. My new song is called Alright and who better to use in your video than those who know your journey
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
I would be finding ways on how to make music lol. I am a leftfield thinking person im always going to go and do whatever it is that isn’t the normal
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
By putting them into their right place is the only way I can stay ahead in life. Family is the priority and drive for me, If I treasure that and respect it I will always stay balanced and ahead and the music will flow
