Let me put it this way. I create my own reality. I’ve gave up on concepts like “GOD” a long time ago. I don’t believe in luck, I believe in opportunity. I’m not leaving this up to fate. That’s not how the universe works, you must take control of your own destiny! This April on the 13th I am releasing my first mix tape “Slumville Transylvania”. I truly believe that without music I would wither away. It’s my purpose.
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Thy KYNG: Hey what’s going on! I wanna start off by thanking Exposed Vocals for this opportunity. So I was born in Philly, but moved out to State College at a young age because my parents got divorced. This may sound cliché, but the very first time I knew what I wanted to be in life was when my step father played me Tupac Shakur. I’ll never forget that day. I wanted to be just like Pac, still do. We lost a God.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Thy KYNG: I’m glad you asked! The name KYNG comes from a combination of beliefs and idles. It’s an acronym for Know Yourself Not God. I am not against God, I just thinks its more important to know yourself. Like Socrates said “Know thyself”. I only use Thy KYNG because “KYNG” was already being used.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Thy KYNG: Of course I give my music away for free! I feel like if my fans pay to come see me preform, the least I can do is give it out for free.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Thy KYNG: Invest in yourself! Never stop grinding. Never give up. Take control of your destiny! It’s all in your hands. Believe in yourself!
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Thy KYNG: I find a beat, play it several times just to get a feel for it then I put myself there. “There” is wherever it takes me. Then I stand up and HAND BANG! I let the music flow through me!
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
Thy KYNG: I try to get my music on as many platforms as I can. Spoify, DatPiff, Spinrilla etc, but my main platform is probably SoundCloud @Thykyng.
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
Thy KYNG: I’d start off by buying a monkey and then copping a condo, one whip, 3 pinky rings and 5 gold chains lol To be honest I’d probably end up still working on music! I don’t think I could take that kind of time off from music.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Thy KYNG: Networking, get out there and find people who are in the same industry and get to know them! Build relationships with them, you never know who you’ll need.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Thy KYNG: OMG! Yes! My very first tape is about to drop April 13th! Its call “Slumville Transylvania” The whole Concept for the tape is crazy! It’s about taking what’s yours! No one named me king so I went out and built my own kingdom so that I could crown myself KYNG! 4.13.16 I open the gates!
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Thy KYNG: I can honestly say I’d probably wither away. I’m being so serious. For the longest time I thought I wanted to graduate from college with a fancy degree, but when I got into Penn State. All I thought about was how I was wasting my time. It was a kind of anxiety. Music makes me feel alive. Better than any drug in the world!
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
Thy KYNG: I just simply just do. I find time. I don’t make excuses for myself.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
Thy KYNG: My face everywhere! I have so much in store for my fans. I’ve also just started up my own clothing brand called “UGLi”. Which is slowly taking off as well! I’ve already made $500 from sells. You should also be on the look out for my EP “K.Y.N.G.” Coming later this year.
