Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
YOUNG TR3Y: I grew in the city of Rochester NY, with both of my parents who are very supportive in what I do. I started rapping when I was 8 years old with my brother Bejon. I had my first live performance at the age of 8 at an event sponsored by local radio station WDKX called the Step Jam. My brother pushed me to perform on my birthday and I “killed” it. After the performance I was inspired more and wanted to immolate my brother in the rap game. I truly believe without his support and tutelage I would not be where I am at today.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
YOUNG TR3Y: I came up with “YOUNG TR3Y” because in my family there are three people with the name “James” beginning with my grandfather, and I begin to formulate and incorporate that in my rap name. As I thought more, I began to associated language with name thus the number three (3) came to my mind. I then begin to think of other languages and the first language that came to my mind was Spanish thus, “tres”. Inasmuch, I have the 3 in “TR3Y” instead of the letter “E”.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
YOUNG TR3Y: I think that online music sharing is a wonderful thing, it is a great way to get your music out to the fans and it’s also an opportunity to get exposed to bigger and better things. I do give my music away for free because back in the day people used to hand out mix tapes with the hope that one-day it will land in the right hands. I think that’s what will happen for me and when it does great things will happen. Like every artist though, I would love to make money for rapping and doing what I love. In addition, I think that it’s every persons dream to make money for doing what they enjoy.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
YOUNG TR3Y: To any artist that is starting up just keep doing what your doing. No matter what, there will always be people who may throw a “monkey wrench” in what you desire. I instead use their negativity to my advantage continuing to strive for greatness. In addition, it better motivates me to add more fuel to my passion and hunger to do bigger and better things. Don’t ever let any obstacles get in your way.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
YOUNG TR3Y: I gather my inspiration from everyday life; there is something new that will happen everyday. I like to brainstorm lyrics first; research a beat (this is where my brother comes in) and then find a beat that fits in with the flow of the song. When I find the right beat that’s when everything comes together.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
YOUNG TR3Y: I usually use the website “SoundCloud” to get all of my music out. My crew along with myself is working on a website to sell our merchandise and feature our work. This is a work in progress and hopefully it will be up soon.
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
YOUNG TR3Y: If I was given half a million and a day off me would honestly give half of the money to my parents. I know for a fact without them I wouldn’t be where I am today. I would use the other half to support my music habits along with studio time in the year off. I would take care of my boys in “Novus Mob” because they are always encouraging me to keep making music and always here for me when I need anything.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
YOUNG TR3Y: There are so many different social media apps out there right now I think it’s only right to use it to my advantage. I could send information about my music via text, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, etc.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
YOUNG TR3Y: I can’t talk about any of my new projects because I want it to be a surprise. Just know that there will be a lot more music to enjoy.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
YOUNG TR3Y: I’m currently playing sports however I incorporate music in whatever I do. If I were not solely focused on music, I would place all my time and energy into education and sports. I believe that a healthy combination of all will assist and better me in becoming more rounded in life for preparation into adulthood.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
YOUNG TR3Y: I just try to stay focused and not let negativity throw me off my game. I know what is important to me and I feel like if I let something distract me I would be disappointed in myself
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
YOUNG TR3Y: 2016 will have a lot more music and hopefully a lot more fans and exposure a lot of good music and hopefully that music lands in the right hands. My current projects are on YouTube and SoundCloud.
