Dj Mayhem known to others by a funny nickname of ‘Packsoup’ grew up and walked in the footsteps of his family, growing up in and around Dj’s and Sound Systems, he had his first live set at the age of 9 and to everyone’s surprise his execution and selection was perfect! Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
DjMayhem: I grew up in a small rapidly growing town of Debe, Trinidad WI. Where i grew up, food was our specialty, food….was the one thing you smelled whole day everyday. You should come sometime and try what we call a doubles.
I decided to become an artist mainly because i was born into music, my parents were music lovers, my uncle has a premier sound company in NewYork. And so it goes down the bloodline.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
DjMayhem: Mayhem….well, i noticed every time i had a gig i would see everyone in the audience just letting go of stress. It’s my job to make people happy, it makes me happy.
So one day i was with a really close friend of mine and he said and i quote, “dawg, you know every time you hit a stage you cause Mayhem”. And then it hit me right in the face, i’m gonna brand myself as Dj Mayhem! My inspiration was that as my friend said, I caused Mayhem whenever i hit a stage. So yeah, my inspiration is to continue causing Mayhem while being Mayhem.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
DjMayhem: Online music sharing is what i call “god” for artists, without it now, almost every single artist would be no one. Free music? All my music is free, my mixes, even some merch.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
DjMayhem: Sure. To those out there starting up and progressing slowly. Research on how to market yourself properly, participate in competitions no matter the recognition, as little as 1% of recognition counts. There are multi-social platforms where you can post your tracks. Most of all, make a statement at the first gig, something that’ll keep the audience and promoters wanting more of you. Remember, the more you make the crowd move the more the promoter’s gonna want you back.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
DjMayhem: I’m not much of a songwriter to be honest. I’m more of a Synth, FruityLoops guy.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
DjMayhem: Yes i do have a website, it’s still unfinished but you can visit at : www.djmayhemtt.jimdo.com . I use SoundCloud, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
DjMayhem: Heh…. I’d donate to charity, See about my family and with whatever i have left is more my studio.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
DjMayhem: I post every link on every single platform i socialize on, also at every gig i play i let the track names of my tracks be shown on the screen. What works best for me is ads.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
DjMayhem: My next step is to get signed to a label. Project wise all i’m gonna say its BigRoom EDM.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
DjMayhem: If Music wasn’t my passion, Graphic Design would be my job.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
DjMayhem: Easy, Be an adult and think ahead.
