Exposed Vocals: How did you hear about Exposed Vocals? What made you decide to sign up?

 

 Nyb Prophecy: I received a message on twitter asking if I was interested in doing and interview with Exposed Vocals. Being an artist in my position, I couldn’t pass up on an opportunity like this.

 

 Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?

 

 Nyb Prophecy: Okay, it’s like this. I was born in Dallas, Tx on January 1, 1991. That’s right I’m a New Year’s Baby hence the name N.Y.B or Nyb Prophecy. However, my father died when I was only 7 months old, therefore I was raised in the small country ghetto of Wharton, Tx. Coming up with no father, I looked up to my older cousin who had an interest in rapping. He influenced me to write my first rhyme. I started rapping with my cousin and a group called 2..0.. (Two Ohh). I eventually migrated to the Jackson Quarter Click; shout out Real, 50 Gs, Mya fya, Da VIP, Big Smooth, Calhoun sing a tune, Mr. Boo Rally, Earn, AK, and the whole click. After falling in love with Hip Hop, I notice the lack of respect and homage being dedicated to the culture. Although the south, mainly Texas, isn’t really respected as Hip Hop, I base my swag, demeanor, style on Hip Hop as a CULTURE. I’m heavily influenced by KRS-One. However like I said earlier, the south not really respected hence the late great Pimp C coining the phrase “Country Rap Tunes”. I currently reside in 3rd ward, Houston, Tx in Cuney Homes “The Bricks” shoutout Killa Cal Wayne, Junebug, and the rest of the brick boys; GHHEETTOOO.

 

 Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?

 

 Nyb Prophecy: Maan. I been through so many names. I chose N.Y.B. because it sounded better than other names I came up with. N.Y.B. is an acronym for New Year’s Baby since I was born on New Year’s day. I chose Prophecy, or the Prophet, because I have a vision for the rap game. I believe we should get back to Hip Hop as a CULTURE.

 Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?

 

Nyb Prophecy:  I believe online music sharing is the future of the music industry. It’s great for marketing, but only if you have everything copyrighted. Of course I give my music away for free because right now fans are more important than money.

 Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?

 Nyb Prophecy: Work ethic; must be striving for overtime. Work, work, work, and then work some more. Eventually all hard work is rewarded. In addition, in order to be considered great at something, you must do it at least 10,000 times. Also, network and build relationships. You are always one relationship away from success

 

 Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?

 

 Nyb Prophecy: Hahaha.. Yes. The best thing to do is to keep going. Most likely, the only one that will really notice is you because you know exactly what you were supposed to do but didn’t do it.  If you continue with the performance like nothing happened, it may be overlooked or just considered as part of the performance.

 

 Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?

 

 Nyb Prophecy:  No I haven’t toured yet, but I’m a non-active member of TxSU debate team and I have a story to share from a road trip. First of all, you become real close to whoever you tour with. I remember stopping at a Chinese buffet restaurant in Alabama. Everyone chose their meal, sat down, and enjoyed the food. However about 10 minutes after everyone finished eating, one by one members and coaches had to line up for the restrooms. It was a multiple stall restroom but it was so nasty and disgusting only one was usable. The bus driver had to wait to make sure no one else had to go before we take off for the next state. At the time I was totally uncomfortable, but now it’s just so funny.

 

 Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?

 

 Nyb Prophecy: Inspiration can come from anywhere. I’m usually pretty self motivated, but I do have my sadder days where I’m not as confident in myself. During those times I find inspiration in other people’s story; whether good or bad. I can look at the homeless man under the bridge and be thankful. Then, I can hear about the underdog of situation coming out on top and be motivated and confident. Even then, I can hear about and innocent life being lost and become conscious about a situation and be inspired. Really my muse defines my writing process; hence music being derived from muse.

 Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?

 

 Nyb Prophecy: No, no website yet. I just use social media to market myself as an artist and to keep in touch with my fans.  Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?

 

Nyb Prophecy: I’m not embarrassed by anything I listen to because 9 times out of 10 Its S.U.C (Screwed Up Click) , but I do have that Bishop Bullwinkle “Hell Nah” which I jam from time to time

 Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?

 

Nyb Prophecy: I would tell my mama she can retire and we don’t have to struggle anymore. I would invest in my music career and continue to master my craft. No days off because dreams come to a sleeper.

 Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?

 

Nyb Prophecy: I record at Barron Studios in Houston, Tx. As for any upgrades, actually, my brother just knocked a wall out in my Mother’s house in attempts to build a studio; you can imagine her surprise when walking into the room. I’m going to help him build a home studio in Foggybottom, Tx working with Pro Tools the industry standard.

 Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?

 

Nyb Prophecy: Marketing and promotions is a tricky subject. What works for one person might not work for the next person, and vice versa. Today, in this microwave generation, you have to capture the audience attention quick and figure out how to hold it. That’s the tricky part and where promotions comes in. Once marketing creates your image, promotions find ways to keep the image going. As of right now I use social media, flyers, and direct contact; direct contact is a must. Try to create a friend in a fan.

 Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?

 

Nyb Prophecy: That’s a hard one. Well you said artists so here goes the list in no particular order; Tupac, Dj Screw, Pimp C, Fat Pat, Krs-One, Nas, Public Enemy, and Dougie Fresh. The place wouldn’t matter cause the show would be epic.

 Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?

 

Nyb Prophecy: just working and networking. Studio grind and building relationships. Trying to get a feature with K-rino, haven’t talked to him yet. I have songs with Killa Cal Wayne and one with JuneBug I haven’t released yet. I’m waiting on Stunna Bam to get back with me on a track I sent him. I’m just trying to work and build my brand.

 Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?

 

Nyb Prophecy:  If I wasn’t making music, then I probably would be thinking about making music. Seriously, I was a star athlete in high school; football is my favorite sport.

 Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?

 

Nyb Prophecy: Yeah. It was a Lil Troy Compilation CD with the song ” Wanna be a Baller”. I was thinking this is the beginning of a lifestyle I wanted to live. Not just music, but a lifestyle. I was so H-town and still am so H-town until I’m 6 feet down.

 Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?

 

Nyb Prophecy:  Now this was a tough adjustment. I learned to put music first because I have to be dedicated. However, I prioritize responsibility by what can wait and what can’t wait. N.Y.B also stands for Never Yield Business. Get your priorities straight.

 Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?

 

Nyb Prophecy: Fans should look forward to a major come up. They should strap in a seatbelt and let’s enjoy this ride together. Witness the growth of greatness from a seed to a blossoming flower surrounded by concrete. I do this for Hip Hop and I do this the underdogs, the have nots; let’s become top dogs and have a lot.
