Exposed Vocals Interviews Matt Woosley
Hey! My name is Matt Woosley. I am an 18 year old living in New Hampshire whose goal is to enjoy music and art with the people around me. I have always had fascination with music and have been fully committed to making my own recently. My main instrument of choice is the guitar because my dad had always encouraged me to play but I know a few other instruments and have set up a recording studio in my apartment. I love all kinds of music and I believe you can pull some kind of inspiration out of any of them.
Exposed Vocals: How did you hear about Exposed Vocals? What made you decide to sign up?
Matt Woosley:
I was followed by them on Twitter and was immediately intrigued with their page. They sent me a message asking for an interview and was glad to.
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Matt Woosley:
My father’s side of the family has some musical blood. He always encouraged me to pick up the guitar. I received my first electric guitar one christmas as a little kid but never picked it up until a few years ago. I immediately fell in love with this instrument and became more aware of my musical atmosphere. My ears became magnetized to all kinds of music and I also found myself discovering my spiritual self.
After I had learned to play the instrument I became more interested in channeling myself through the instrument instead of just hitting notes. I guess you could say I just got pulled into this stage of my life, I didn’t really consciously choose to.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Matt Woosley:
Haha ask my dad. It’s just my name, but I like it.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Matt Woosley:
At this stage in my career I am only using online music sharing. I’m just trying to get my sound out their for people to listen to.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Matt Woosley:
I’m still in that stage, I guess the only advice I could give is to be yourself. As long as you’re yourself as an artist people will pick up on your style.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Matt Woosley:
I mainly just record my music at this point. When I start performing I’m sure I will make mistakes, but everyone makes mistakes, I’ll just laugh it off.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
Matt Woosley:
No I don’t tour. I’m a senior in highschool.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Matt Woosley:
I find that when I try to write songs i can’t. My creativity comes when it wants and usually comes when i’m just in the moment, not forcing anything to happen but just enjoying life as it is.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
Matt Woosley:
Yes I have a YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and soundcloud. This is my soundcloud if you’re interested in listening to some of music.
I’m planning on making my own website soon for people to keep up to date with my musical activities.
Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?
Matt Woosley:
I don’t think I’m embarrassed about any of my music on my phone, I love it all. I try to gain inspiration from all of it even if it’s bad.
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
Matt Woosley:
I would produce an album and get all new musical equipment. Hopefully launching me into the public eye.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
Matt Woosley:
Eventually i will get a new guitar and new equipment. Right now i’m working with some beginner grade equipment but that doesn’t mean i can’t make good music with it.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Matt Woosley:
Just talking to people about it and spreading it through all forms of social atmosphere I can reach.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
Matt Woosley:
I love so many bands and artists. This is a hard choice but I would probably say either Grateful Dead in the 60’s or Pink Floyd around the same time.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Matt Woosley:
I’m currently working on my album called ceiling stories. It will come out around summer time and I’m looking to spread it as much as I can.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Matt Woosley:
Definitely either an artist or jobless haha. These are the only things I want to do.
Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?
Matt Woosley:
Haha oh jeez. I think the first album I might have bought is some kind of Pink Floyd album, maybe obscured by clouds.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
Matt Woosley:
It’s really hard, I have to keep up with school and relationships. Going to college soon. I have to do all of my musical processing on my own. Writing, playing, recording, mixing and producing. But the reward of making a good song is the best feeling.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
Matt Woosley:
The album I’m making should be done by summer time. Hopefully people will enjoy it’s wide variety of musical styles.
