Exposed Vocals: How did you hear about Exposed Vocals? What made you decide to sign up?

I heard about exposed vocals from my twitter page. It seemed like a very good platform to advertise my music on.

 

 

 

Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?

I grew up in Belmont North Carolina. About 15 minutes south of Charlotte. Music was always played a huge roll in my life. My brother (Cory Brown) got me into old school and new school rap music at a young age. With all his friends. I use to freestyle with them a lot. Then I  realized I had an ear and a talent for music. That others maybe didn’t.

 

 

 

Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?

Well my entire name is John Taylor Brown. I wanted to stay me and keep basically my own name. I didn’t want to try and be anyone else but myself.

 

 

Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?

I think online sharing is an awesome platform for up and coming artist. Yes I give music away for free sometimes. I give it away for free because I make music for the love of it. I know people struggle and its hard for them to buy songs or albums. So I try to cater to my fans and give them great music that they don’t have to pay for all the time.

 

 

 

Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?

Hustle as much as you can. Any website or platform you have access to put your music on. Do it!! Go to radio stations in person. Let them see your face. Let them see how confident you are about your music and brand. Find any venues and bars that have live performances. Talk to the owner and see if its possible to perform your music at there venue.

 

 

Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?

Yes I’ve made mistakes while performing. I just clear it out of my head and go that much harder. Obstacles will always pop up in your career. You can’t get down on yourself. You must shake it off, put your head down and keep pushing. Remember this is what you started for. So just make sure you enjoy and take in every moment.

 

 

 

Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?

I do not tour. Ive done shows all over the state. My favorite moment was when I opened for Cash Money Records artist Caskey in Cleveland Ohio. At the Agora. It was a great show then afterwards Caskey and I. Kicked it at the bar with all the fans after the show. Then we partied all night.

 

 

 

Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?

I get inspiration from events in my life and things that happen in my life. I try to stay 100% truthful and honest in my songs. I like to be by myself most of the times. I like to shut out from the world and zone in. When i start writing a track. I don’t take the headphones off until I am finished and fully happy with it. I also like being in the studio with my producer and creating a beat and song from scratch.

 

 

Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?

Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?

You would find “MIB” by Will Smith, “My Dick In a Box” by Justin Timberlake and The Lonely Islanders, “Amish Paradise” by Weird Al Yankovic

 

 

 

Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?

I would travel the entire world. I would help people and just relax and unwind. I would take a snowboard trip in Vermont. I would find a deserted island. Bring all my friends and family. Just to have an incredible vacation and party like we’ve never partied before.

 

 

 

Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?

My producer (Brad Hoyle) and I work with the program Logic. Its a very top of the line software. Im not the greatest with the technical side of music but my producer/ engineer is an absolute genius when it comes to anything music. I don’t plan on upgrading my equipment any time soon but I do plan on getting a bigger studio. In uptown Charlotte.

 

 

 

Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?

I promote my music on all different online outlets. Such as soundcloud, reverberation, twitter, etc. I am promoted by SODMG on my twitter page. I also promote my music threw underground radio station. One of the best ways I’ve found to promote your music. Is to throw release parties for your albums or singles and promoting it at shows and venues.

 

 

Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?

I would love to perform with Eminem. Because he has probably been the biggest influence in an artist threw out my life. I would want to perform at the Charlotte Hornets Arena in Charlotte North Carolina. Mainly because I love my city and I love performing in front of my how town.

 

 

 

Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?

Well I just released my album “The Birth” not too long ago. Im going to follow it up with my new album “Come Too Far”. As of now. Before that project. Im working on a mixtape right now. With the super talented Chris Cobain from St. Louis. The project will be called “Two For The Show”. It will be finished in a few months and it is gonna be a super chill and super lyrical mixtape. Talking about the struggles of coming up in the rap game and also all the good times that come with it.

 

 

 

Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?

I would probably be working in some dead end job. Waisting my time. Or possibly be in jail somewhere. Music levels me out and keeps me on the right path. I work so hard in my music that I don’t have time to get into trouble but I wouldn’t change it in anyway.

 

 

 

Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?

The first ever album I bought with my own money. Was “Nellyville” by Nelly. I was always exposed to rap music before that but that album show me a fun but yet very serious side of the music game. That I took in and always found as a little inspiration but honestly I find inspiration in everything in life. Not only music.

 

 

 

Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?

It is very hard trying to juggle all the facets of my life. Ive got the best family, friends, and support system. Which makes it a lot easier. My father passed away 2 years ago. First he was my best friend, mentor, and biggest fan. He carried the weight of the world on his back but he carried it as if it was weightless. I keep him in my heart and just look back on all the things that man did and think to myself that I can’t let him down. The same blood that ran in that man. Also runs in veins as well. So I just keep my head down and keep working on making my dream a reality.

 

 

 

Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?

The fans should look forward to a lot of upcoming music, videos, and plenty more. I told my story on my last album “The Birth”. Now its time to have fun and work with other artist around the world that want to make transcending music.
