Mulberry Purple – NightAir Mix “a satisfying, seven minute journey through music and thoughtfulness.”

0

This is a really enjoyable release. The backdrop feels a little like a demo, a simple beat and chord progression upon which the leading guitar and vocal melodies can express a certain artistic and emotional freedom. Even as the opening guitar solo pours out around you, the piece is enjoyable, calming, stylish and simplistic all at once. When the vocal comes into play it brings a surprising new dynamic. The lower tone of the voice contrasts powerfully with the higher sound of the guitar part. The voice is beautiful, the depth is captivating and the lyrics reinforce this mood consistently.

As things progress, the key change for the chorus section is huge, the return from this to the guitar solo works really well. Despite the elements that make up this soundscape being fairly minimalist and familiar, the overall set-up and structure has something refreshingly new about it. Whenever you start to get complacent, thinking you know how it all will go, something unexpected comes into play. At first it’s the initial vocal, not too often does a track begin with a guitar solo. Then it’s the second vocal melody, the higher and more passionate, louder vocal part. Then it’s the distortion, the additional instrumentation filling out the backdrop, slowly building towards this immense wall of audio and emotion. The switch from the indie-rock ambience to the electronic makes it all feel like the various scenes of a film unfolding. It’s unusual, but it works really well.

The mix is captivating and incredibly easy to lose yourself to. It has an addictive quality to it, there’s an ongoing smoothness that keeps the thread alive, keeps you familiar with your surroundings, and at the same time there is so much evolution that every moment brings something new and unpredictable. This is a satisfying, seven minute journey through music and thoughtfulness.
