In this story

Lilpapercut began making music as th3paperboy as a kid before growing into the artist behind three full-length projects: the thirteen-track If love was an album, the eleven-track ROUGHED UP LOVE, and now If legends became an album. The new record was made independently in California, with Lilpapercut handling everything alone and starting from the lyrics. It turns toward the artists who helped make sense of love and its hurt, and Lilpapercut names Juice WRLD, XXXTentacion and Joji as influences. Below, Lilpapercut talks about the thread connecting all three projects, the tribute track “Juice world,” and working toward being okay rather than chasing popularity.

Your new album is called If legends became an album. Who or what were the legends you had in mind, and what did you want the title to say about the record?

Lilpapercut: The legends are the artists whose music helped me feel understood and inspired me to create something lasting myself. Juice WRLD, XXXTentacion and Joji are influences on me.

If legends became an album follows If love was an album and the eleven-track ROUGHED UP LOVE. How do you see these three projects connecting, and what shifted for you in moving from love to legends?

Lilpapercut: Love connects all three. If love was an album explores wanting connection. ROUGHED UP LOVE explores what happens when that love hurts. If legends became an album turns toward the artists who helped me make sense of those feelings and find my own voice.

Walk us through how If legends became an album was made: where you recorded, who was in the room with you, and whether a song usually starts with a beat, a melody or a line.

Lilpapercut: I made it independently in California. It was all me, and I start with the lyrics.

Pick one track from the new album that means the most to you right now and tell us the story behind it, from the first idea to the finished version.

Lilpapercut: I’d choose “Juice world.” Juice WRLD’s music made me more emotional. With that song, I wanted to express that feeling and pay tribute to him.

Where do you come from, and how did that place and the people around you shape the artist who became Lilpapercut, including the name itself?

Lilpapercut: I started as th3paperboy when I was a kid. Eventually, I was no longer a boy. I was an artist, and I became Lilpapercut.

You have put out three full-length projects in a short stretch of time. What keeps driving you to create and release at that pace, and what do you hope listeners take from the music?

Lilpapercut: I hope they understand what I feel through my music.

What comes next for you after If legends became an album, whether that is new music, collaborations, live shows or something else you are building toward?

Lilpapercut: I’m working toward being okay. I’m not looking for popularity.
