Will the CMT Music Awards Return in 2026? Here’s Everything We Know
The country music world was hit with a big shock—Paramount Global has decided to put the 2025 CMT Music Awards on pause. Fans aren’t happy. For years, the CMTs have been the one award show where fans actually had a voice, voting for their favorite artists without industry politics getting in the way. Now, with Paramount restructuring after its merger with Skydance Media, the show’s future is uncertain.
Bruce Gillmer, Paramount’s president of music, announced the decision in a memo, calling it a “pause” while the company “reimagines and optimizes” its event lineup. Sounds vague, right? That’s corporate speak for “we have no idea if it’s coming back.” Officially, they say 2026 is a possibility, but let’s be real—once something is shelved, it doesn’t always make a grand return.
Fans wasted no time reacting. Social media blew up with disappointment and frustration. One fan summed it up perfectly: “The CMT Awards were OUR awards show. An awards show where we actually felt seen & heard. Now that’s taken from us.” Others pointed out that while other country awards shows still exist, none of them feel as interactive as the CMTs. “So we still get the scripted CMAs, but the one show that let us vote is gone? Make it make sense.”
For artists, this pause is a major blow, especially for up-and-comers. The CMTs have always been more inclusive of independent and rising artists, giving them a chance to perform alongside the biggest names in the industry. Without it, breaking into the mainstream gets even harder. Expect more artists to shift their focus to TikTok, social media, and streaming platforms to build a following without relying on traditional awards shows.
Even though the CMTs are on hold, there’s still plenty of country music action in 2025. The ACM Awards are happening in May, the CMAs in November, and the People’s Choice Country Awards are likely to return too. But will any of these really replace the CMTs? Not likely. The fan-driven voting, the unique performances, and the more relaxed, fun vibe of the show will be missed.
So what happens now? If the backlash is strong enough, maybe Paramount will rethink its decision. Maybe we’ll get a new format, a new platform, or some kind of revival in 2026. Or maybe, like so many “paused” events before it, the CMT Music Awards will quietly fade into history. Either way, country music fans won’t let this one go without a fight.
