RIAA Thanks Disney & Universal for Jumping Into AI Copyright War: ‘Critical Stand for Human Creativity’
The music industry isn’t shying away from a legal showdown with artificial intelligence these days. The latest salvo in this battle comes from none other than Disney and Universal, who are taking on AI firm Midjourney in a copyright lawsuit that has the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) standing firmly by their side, calling it a “critical stand for human creativity.”
The lawsuit, filed on June 11th, alleges that Midjourney has been shamelessly swiping copyrighted works to train its AI image generator, marking a significant moment as major Hollywood players step into the legal ring with AI firms, challenging the boundaries of creativity and innovation.
RIAA chairman/CEO Mitch Glazier minced no words in his statement, slamming companies like Midjourney as “bad actors” who prioritize their own commercial gains over respecting the creativity and efforts of human artists. He emphasized the need for partnerships that balance AI innovation with preserving the essence of human artistry, hinting at a potential storm brewing in the legal realm over the concept of “fair use” in AI training.
The music giants aren’t alone in their fight against AI infringement. Universal Music, Warner Music, and Sony Music have already thrown their hats in the legal ring, accusing AI music firms Udio and Suno of plundering copyrighted music on an unprecedented scale. The allegations against Midjourney echo similar concerns raised by these major labels and highlight a growing storm in the industry as artists, publishers, and creative industries unite against AI copyright breaches.
Disney and Universal’s lawsuit, encapsulated in a hefty 110-page legal document, paints Midjourney as a flagrant violator of intellectual property rights, dragging beloved characters like Darth Vader and Shrek into the legal quagmire. The studios argue that regardless of the technology used, piracy remains piracy, posing a direct threat to the foundation of U.S. copyright law and the creative industries it upholds.
As the legal battle escalates, all eyes are on the courts to see how they navigate this uncharted territory where machines learn from human creativity, potentially reshaping the landscape of artistic production. For now, the clash between human artistry and AI innovation rages on, with the outcome poised to shape the future of creativity and intellectual property rights in the music and entertainment realms.
