Noel Gallagher Joins Zak Starkey and Shaun Ryder’s Supergroup for New Song: Listen
Noel Gallagher, the rock legend, has joined forces with Mantra of the Cosmos, a supergroup featuring Happy Mondays’ unconventional duo Shaun Ryder and Bez, Ride’s multi-talented Andy Bell, and the former drumming powerhouse of The Who, Zak Starkey. The result? A fresh new track called “Domino Bones (Gets Dangerous).”
This psych-rock gem was initially teased earlier this year and dropped on a limited vinyl run, only to be unleashed on streaming services for the hungry masses. When asked about the song in an interview with The Times back in January, Gallagher described it as a wild mix of Dylan, Dali, and Ginsberg sprinkled with some cosmic jibber-jabber. And let’s not forget the eccentric Bez, who dances like no other, Zak Starkey’s powerhouse drumming, and Andy Bell’s magic touch on strings.
The supergroup celebrated the vinyl release with a jam-packed show at Liverpool’s iconic Cavern Club, a venue that echoes with the history of Ringo Starr and The Beatles’ early days in 1962.
In a matter of weeks, Gallagher is set to kick off the highly anticipated Oasis reunion tour in Cardiff, Wales, on July 4th. The tour will sweep through the U.K., Ireland, North America, Asia, and beyond. Bell is expected to rejoin the Oasis lineup on bass, a role he held from 1999 to 2009 and featuring on three of their studio albums. However, Starkey, who was part of Oasis from 2004 to 2008, will not be part of the reunion tour, with Joey Waronker stepping into the drummer role.
While Gallagher is gearing up for the Oasis reunion, Starkey has been caught in a whirlwind regarding his position as The Who’s drummer. Starkey’s journey with the band dates back to 1996, touring worldwide with Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend at the helm.
After a performance in March where Starkey was reportedly let go by The Who over issues with his drumming on the final track, “The Song Is Over,” a chaotic game of he-said-she-said ensued. Despite being initially axed and then rehired, Starkey finally claimed in May that Daltrey had asked him to retire from the band due to alleged errors in his performance, a claim that was vehemently denied by The Who.
This summer, The Who will be embarking on their final North American tour, kicking off in Sunrise, Florida, on August 16. For a taste of the eclectic collaboration between Noel Gallagher and Mantra of the Cosmos, check out “Domino Bones” below.
