Janis Ian, Brenda Russell, Vicki Peterson & More to Be Honored by Women Songwriters Hall of Fame
The Women Songwriters Hall of Fame is gearing up to mark its fifth-year milestone with a two-day celebration at the Mead Center for American Theatre in Washington, D.C. This event promises a dynamic mix of workshops and panel discussions on June 20, leading up to the grand awards ceremony on June 21.
Hosted by the radiant Claudia Jordan, this year’s ceremony will be a tribute to 13 extraordinary women spanning various genres, from music stalwarts to pioneering forces. Among the distinguished 2025 honorees are iconic figures such as two-time Grammy winner Janis Ian, soulful songstress Regina Belle, Grammy nominees Melba Moore, Brenda Russell, and Janiva Magness. The lineup also includes the versatile Julie Giroux, Vicki Peterson of The Bangles fame, Christina Shusho, Asha Puthli, and Dr. Stacy L. Smith, the visionary behind the groundbreaking USC Annenberg Study. Dr. Smith, who was slated for recognition last year, faced illness but continues to inspire with her impactful work.
Not forgetting those who left us too soon, the event will pay tribute to Motown luminary Sylvia Moy and the ever-talented country singer Lari White, honoring their enduring legacies posthumously.
A standout moment in the evening will undoubtedly be the acknowledgment of Ian and Russell, both acclaimed for their Grammy-nominated hits that have left an indelible mark on the music landscape. Ian’s haunting “At Seventeen” from 1976 and Russell’s evocative “Piano in the Dark” from 1989 stand as testaments to their songwriting prowess and enduring appeal.
The celebration will be electric with live performances by Nes Powers, Evelyn Rubio, Robert Cristian Jordan, and Mallow Hill, alongside entertainment acts by Adam Stone and Women on Fire. Enthusiastic presenters Andree Harris and Telishia Berry, the ever-talented DJ Supreme Da Barber, and Versie Jean, backed by musical director Christopher Valentine, will ensure a pulsating atmosphere filled with music and exuberance.
Beyond the glamour and glitz, the organization will set the stage for emerging talent through its annual songwriting contest and mixer on Friday. Ten promising songwriters will have the chance to showcase their original compositions to a panel of industry experts, vying for the coveted prize of studio time at Omega Recording Studios in Rockville, MD, a brand-new guitar, and the golden opportunity to perform at the awards ceremony. The mixer will serve as a networking hub connecting budding artists with seasoned veterans, setting the stage for collaboration and mentorship. Montanique “Monei” Sutton will take charge as host of the songwriting mixer, guiding the next wave of music creators towards greatness.
Dr. Janice McLean DeLoatch, the visionary behind the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame, emphasizes the importance of recognizing and uplifting female voices in a landscape often dominated by male counterparts. Her passionate commitment to championing gender parity and providing a platform for women in music resonates deeply in the organization’s ethos, promising a brighter, more inclusive future for music lovers worldwide.
Joining the illustrious ranks of past inductees like Roberta Flack, Valerie Simpson, and Deniece Williams, this year’s honorees will add their names to a prestigious roster that celebrates the diverse contributions of women in music. From trailblazers of the past to visionaries of the present, the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame stands as a beacon of inspiration and empowerment, paving the way for a new generation of musical storytellers.
