Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Vin Ryan: I was born and raised in Jakarta, Indonesia. I learned classical piano since I was three and had always been interested in music ever since. There had been quite some changes in what I wanted to pursue. I did music, then I went to film, and then I went back to music! I guess that’s where my passion is. But, it seems that everything has always been related to art in a way. I did get my bachelor in business but I was always focused on my extracurricular activities that mainly required creativity more than anything else. I decided to become an artist and pursue my career as a singer-songwriter when I started writing songs. Writing song is not just peaceful for me. I can pour everything that I have learned and processed throughout my life through writing songs. It is a combination of both my emotion and intelligence. I feel that I’m harnessing the most out of myself by becoming a singer-songwriter.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Vin Ryan: Yes, 3Ps: Pursue, Persist, and Persevere. It’s all about opportunities. No matter how skilful you are, if there is no right opportunity, it’s hard to get to where you want to be. Sometimes you need to build your own door if you can’t find one. Therefore, while being ready of any possibility, you have to keep pushing and pushing. Opportunities don’t just come to you. You have to pursue. If you still can’t find it, persist on getting it. Then, it has to be a constant push and that’s why you need to persevere. Also, don’t forget to believe in yourself. As much as you want others to believe you, they are not going to if you don’t believe in yourself. The last thing is to think smarter not harder. Most successful things come out of thinking outside the box. Don’t be afraid to be the first one to approach anything because you might be starting something big!
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Vin Ryan: Yes, I believe that most artists make mistakes during performances! Just smile and keep going. The last thing we want to do is to look like we just made a mistake. I haven’t had any major mistakes that require a song to be replayed but I know it happens to many artists. If it is something that is not major, then just let go and move on. But, if it is major, maybe I would consider stopping and replaying. The audience deserves nothing but the best! Therefore, I need to give my best performances too!
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
Vin Ryan: Not yet! But, I will early next year. We’ll see after I’ve done some tour later!
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
Vin Ryan: I just love my Neumann TLM 103 right now. But, I wouldn’t mind upgrading it to U87! Neumann suits my voice really well.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Vin Ryan: Quality over quantity. Find people who like the genre of music that you do and tell them about your music. There are many music enthusiasts working on the business side of music and if you can get their attention, they can help lead the way for you! Yes, it’s all about networking but just remember that we all love music in a way that might be different than the other. But, music is still a language by itself! Find people who might share similar interests as you do.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
Vin Ryan: Freddie Mercury! He is just such powerful singer! I love his vocal projection and his performance in general. Not only that, he is a great writer too. Basically, he is such an inspiration to every singer and musician. I’m not sure about which venue we would be performing at… but maybe Staples Center?
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Vin Ryan: Yes, I’m still in the process of writing for my next EP. I’m planning to reach out to a pretty well established producer in the industry. Fingers crossed! But, my goal is to do a collaboration with him for this album.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Vin Ryan: I would be writing books. I love writing in general. I think I’m just more of a creative kind of person overall! I’ll still try to do as much creative stuff as I can!
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in the next year or so?
Vin Ryan: My next EP and new music videos! I can’t wait to produce my new songs. I have a few that are written already. Maybe, I’ll drop a hint or two some time in the near future! Keep in touch with me on my Facebook and Instagram!
Exposed Vocals: Any Shout-outs?
Vin Ryan: Thanks Exposed Vocals for giving me this opportunity to be interviewed! I also want to thank all my family and friends who are always supportive of me. I can’t ever say thank you enough but please know that I appreciate all of you from the bottom of my heart. You are all sources of my inspiration.
