As The Word Traveler gears up for release, Exposed Vocals sat down with Bullet Brak to discuss the journey behind the album, the power of collaboration, and what’s next for one of hip-hop’s most relentless MCs. In this exclusive interview, he opens up about the creative process, his global recording experience, and his mission to bring real rap back to the forefront. Let’s dive in.
Exposed Vocals: The Word Traveler is dropping soon! What was the driving force behind this album, and how does it represent where you are as an artist today?
Bullet Brak: This new body of work is my first album that I dropped in over 10 years, and I took my time to make sure I tapped into all genres of hip-hop. I have a great feeling that new listeners will enjoy it, and my diehard Day Ones will love the art as well.
Exposed Vocals: The producer lineup is stacked with legends like Fredro Starr and Stu Bangas. How did these collaborations come about, and what was it like working with them?
Bullet Brak: I also worked with Termanology, who produced one of the records on the album. Term is a personal friend of mine and a major supporter since day one. As for Fredro, I was on tour with him for about two months in 2023. I was also on tour with RA The Rugged Man and Sticky Fingaz, and I’ll be releasing records with both of those artists this year as well.
Exposed Vocals: Your music has always balanced raw lyricism with high-energy production. How did you approach crafting the sound for this project?
Bullet Brak: Honestly, I have to give Corey Black his flowers on this project. My brother Corey helped me with everything—from artwork to sound production, to revisions, to listening sessions, and everything else in between. Also, the dynamic mixing and mastering by Sir Freak really brought a different element to the project as well.
Exposed Vocals: The title The Word Traveler suggests movement and storytelling. What’s the meaning behind the name, and how does it tie into the album’s themes?
Bullet Brak: Out of the eight songs, none of the records were recorded in the same place. Four of the records were recorded in different countries. The producers on the album are from all different locations around the globe, and the mixing and mastering was done by engineers from Greece and Belgium. Also, that’s what I’m kinda known for—just being at any random place at any random time. Honestly, it’s all because of the music and the words I put on records.
Exposed Vocals: You’ve got a track with Papoose—what was it like collaborating with someone so respected for his pen game?
Bullet Brak: This is actually the second song I have with Papoose. Pap is one of my favorite MCs, and it’s definitely an honor to have worked with him. I’m also the first independent artist to release a record and video with him as president of hip-hop for TuneCore. I went toe-to-toe with a top-tier MC and held my ground—not many artists who have featured on a record with Papoose can say that.
Exposed Vocals: With hip-hop evolving constantly, how do you stay true to your sound while still pushing the genre forward?
Bullet Brak: Honestly, I’m just concerned with putting out good music—everything else is what it is. I appreciate those who appreciate me and try to provide the best lyrical soundtrack for my village and community.
Exposed Vocals: Are there any tracks on the album that hold a special significance to you? Any personal favorites?
Bullet Brak: To be honest with you, I haven’t even listened to any of the records since we got everything finalized and mastered. I’ve been working on a lot of other music, and I also wanna be fresh to hear it when it releases—just like everyone else.
But for the record, they’re all my favorite records.
Exposed Vocals: What’s your mindset going into 2025? Any big moves planned outside of the album drop?
Bullet Brak: I’m releasing four other EPs, which are collaborations with other artists and producers. I’m also going on tour in the UK with hip-hop legend Blaq Poet in May 2025. We also have an EP releasing this year.
Exposed Vocals: The pre-order for The Word Traveler is live—what exclusive content or surprises can fans expect if they grab a copy early?
Bullet Brak: Whoever purchases The Word Traveler online will receive behind-the-scenes footage, video clips, personal shoutouts, and a couple of other special items. I don’t want to give everything away, but they’re definitely worth it.
Exposed Vocals: If someone is just discovering Bullet Brak, which track from the album should they listen to first to really understand your artistry?
Bullet Brak: Not trying to sound arrogant, but I would just tell them to pick any track that they would like. Then, I’d also let them know that I look forward to hearing their feedback after they finish the whole album.
I also want to give a shout-out to Mr. Randy and tell him thank you for his time and support. It means a lot to independent artists, and I just want to let you know that you’re appreciated. Thank you very much.
