Born in Queens, New York, Worthy has always had an innate connection to music. His journey from behind the scenes as a sought-after producer to stepping into the spotlight as an artist himself is a testament to his passion, perseverance, and undeniable talent. His distinct sound, blending elements of R&B, soul, and hip-hop, has garnered him a loyal fanbase and critical acclaim.
Beyond music, Worthy’s business acumen extends to his roles as the CEO of Humble Sound Records and the co-owner of 3 Kingdoms Group Sports Agency, proving that his creative and entrepreneurial spirit knows no bounds.
James Worthy recently sat down with Exposed Vocals founder Randy Morano for an exclusive, in-depth interview. During their conversation, James opened up about his musical journey, the inspirations that have shaped his sound, and his evolution from a sought-after producer to a solo artist. He also discussed his entrepreneurial ventures, the challenges of navigating the music industry as an independent artist, and his vision for the future. Here’s what he had to say.
Randy: Growing up in Queens, New York, what were some of your earliest musical influences that shaped your sound today?
James: There have been so many artists that I’ve admired throughout the years, but the ones that truly stuck with me were A Tribe Called Quest, Whodini, Kanye West, Dru Hill, Michael Jackson, and so many others. I’ve always been someone who took inspiration from things around me, which always gave me an advantage because it didn’t limit me to just one box or genre.
Randy: How did you first get into music production, and what was the moment you realized this was your calling?
James: Interestingly enough, I have always been around music from a very young age, but it didn’t really hit me to become a musician until I had the opportunity to meet Michael Jackson—who was, and still is in my opinion, the greatest of all time. At that moment, I realized at age 11 that music would be my profession, though I didn’t yet know exactly where I would fit in. Eventually, I started indulging in the art of songwriting, which later turned into music production to form full songs.
Randy: Can you share a pivotal moment in your career that set you on the path to becoming a Grammy Award-winning producer?
James: My journey hasn’t been the most structured or typical path to success. There have always been highs and lows, but also unorthodox situations that led to opportunities for me to gain respect and notoriety among my industry peers. I remember having sessions with Justin Bieber and several other artists that gave me a chance to thrive in my work at that time. All those experiences helped me earn prestigious accolades.
Randy: You’ve worked with some major artists in the industry. Can you share a memorable collaboration experience that impacted your career?
James: To name a few, I have had the pleasure of collaborating with Robin S, Justin Bieber, 112, Meek Mill, Fetty Wap, and many others. A memorable collaboration would have to be “Let You Go”—a track I did with 112 and Big Gipp of Goodie Mob.
Randy: As an artist, songwriter, and producer, how do you balance these different roles creatively?
James: To me, all of those roles go hand in hand. I really can’t have one without the other, but I am an advocate of teamwork, so I bring in certain individuals to execute the vision instead of wearing all the hats at once.
Randy: Your music has a unique blend of R&B, hip-hop, and soul. How would you personally describe your sound?
James: I would describe it as Progressive Music. I often experiment with sound and push the boundaries of my music in every project I release. I don’t like limiting myself to one style or genre.
Randy: How has your artistry evolved since your debut, and what do you think sets your music apart in today’s industry?
James: My artistry has evolved quite drastically in many ways—both good and bad. When I created my debut EP, Blu Leisure, it was during a time when experimental R&B was being developed, and I wanted to explore that not just in sound but also lyrically. That set me apart from other artists in that lane, in addition to producing and engineering the project.
Randy: What inspired you to start Humble Sound Records, and what’s your vision for the label?
James: I started the imprint because I always saw myself running my own label while also giving a home to artists and creatives that I believed had the potential to be great. My vision is to grow Humble Sound Records into the first-choice label where artists feel they have a safe space to release their work in the best ways possible.
Randy: Being the co-owner of 3 Kingdoms Group Sports Agency, what led you into the sports management business?
James: I saw it as a great opportunity to expand my brand into other avenues, including sports. My partner, Steve Sharpe, presented the idea to me, and we developed the concept around Music and Sports Entertainment.
Randy: What challenges have you faced as an independent artist and label owner, and how have you overcome them?
James: As a creative, you are always faced with obstacles like internal struggles, lack of business knowledge, and people not believing in your vision. I have encountered all of the above, but the more confidence I grew, the more hunger I had for success.
Randy: What advice would you give to upcoming artists who aspire to follow in your footsteps?
James: Stay focused on yourself and stay out of the way.
Randy: Having been in the industry for years, how do you think the music business has changed, and where do you see it going?
James: The industry has changed dramatically with the new digital era. With AI and technological advancements, music consumption has evolved in ways we’ve never seen before. There are always pros and cons, but I see innovation being beneficial if used correctly. I see the industry becoming more automated, with companies controlling more data usage.
Randy: Are there any artists or producers you haven’t worked with yet but would love to collaborate with in the future?
James: At this point in my career, I’m interested in working with those I identify with creatively—whether mainstream or independent.
Randy: The industry is shifting more toward independent artistry. What are your thoughts on the role of major labels versus independent artists today?
James: Right now, it’s the best time to be an independent artist. Most artists don’t need a major label to release music. It comes down to audience, influence, and teamwork. The best product will always find the right people while allowing the artist to retain control over their work.
Randy: Outside of music, what are some of your passions and hobbies that keep you inspired?
James: I enjoy fine art, basketball, traveling to new places, and watching documentaries.
Randy: As a SAG actor, how do you balance music with your acting career, and do you have any upcoming film or TV projects?
James: I haven’t been very active in acting recently, but my goal is to begin auditioning for roles again in 2025. Right now, music is my main focus.
Randy: If you could go back in time and give advice to your younger self, what would it be?
James: Be more patient and trust the process. Sometimes in life, you don’t know what you don’t know until things happen. I wouldn’t change anything, though—those experiences make you who you are.
Randy: Can you tell us about any new music, projects, or collaborations you have in the works?
James: Right now, I’m crafting my debut album, Nevermind What They Said. For lack of a better term, it’s probably my best work thus far.
Randy: What legacy do you want to leave behind in the music industry and beyond?
James: I want to be remembered as someone who not only cared about his craft but contributed works that touched and inspired many around the world.
Randy: Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
James: Winning more awards, touring, collaborating, and continuing to build my empire.
