Exposed Vocals: How has your diverse background, including experiences with poverty, military service, and working in the prison system, influenced your approach to creating music and poetry?
Mark: My diverse background with poverty, military service, and working in the prison system influenced a metaphoric way to create music with the word of God as a foundational way to let people know that restoration is within reach no matter your situation.
Exposed Vocals: In your bio, you mention writing music metaphorically for others to see and to help them choose better paths. Can you share a specific example of a song where you feel this metaphorical approach was particularly impactful?
Mark: I have a song called Watch The Moon where I express my thoughts metaphorically while stating that “I walk this place of living to get myself right, so much quicksand I wonder if I’m walking right.” I know that statement can relate to people in many different ways to want to continue to pursue the right path.
Exposed Vocals: How do your Christian beliefs play a role in shaping the themes and messages in your music and poetry?
Mark: My Christian beliefs shape the music that I put out by using the word of God to further deepen the thought process of what I want to display out of the many situations that I have encountered.
Exposed Vocals: Could you talk about a specific moment or experience that inspired you to pursue a career as a Christian music artist and poet?
Mark: I remember visiting my hometown and running into people that I had done things to, and them wanting to cause harm to me. Being thankful as well as stubborn, I got back into the streets with the status that I was known for. I heard God’s voice in those situations, telling me to avoid danger. I had to sit down and reflect on what really could’ve happened to me. Some of those situations helped shape the music that I write.
Exposed Vocals: Given your background in the prison system, do you believe that music and art can play a role in rehabilitation and personal transformation for individuals who have faced adversity?
Mark: I do believe that music and art can play a heavy role in rehabilitating and personal transformation for those who are willing to look in the mirror, ask for forgiveness as well as repentance, and truly mean it from the heart—while also walking away from past decisions that got them in the wrong place.
Exposed Vocals: How do you navigate the balance between creating music that is both inspiring and accessible to a diverse audience?
Mark: It’s like riding a unique roller coaster where you can test the edges of being the peculiar individual that God made me to be, so that I can express the unique mindset in a metaphoric way.
Exposed Vocals: Can you share some insights into your creative process? How do you typically go about crafting a new song or poem?
Mark: My process always starts with praying, praise, and worship to ask God what He would have me write, and for me to get out of the way of the gift that He has given me. I spend a lot of time reading scripture and applying it to certain moments in my life to understand better for myself as well as for others.
Exposed Vocals: As an artist who aims to inspire others, what do you hope listeners take away from your music and poetry?
Mark: As an artist, I hope that listeners can take away solutions to certain moments in their lives where they have come close to what I have dealt with. I would like for them to make one decision to better their life or make the complete change for the better—to understand why the struggle they go through is valuable for themselves and for others.
Exposed Vocals: How do you handle challenges or moments of self-doubt in your creative journey, and what advice would you give to aspiring Christian artists facing similar obstacles?
Mark: Facing self-doubt is a challenge within itself, but what I have come to learn about it is that you have to listen to what others have to say in a humble way, as well as receive criticism to make you better at your craft—because God has more for you than you think.
Exposed Vocals: In what ways do you see your music contributing to positive change, whether on a personal level for individuals or on a broader societal scale?
Mark: I see the music that I am putting out changing people’s hearts and minds, helping them understand that the society I came to know doesn’t fully define where I’m going or the decisions I have to make to better themselves personally.
