Lyrics:
BY THE TIME
By the time you’ll be getting ‘round to reading this
By the time you might know what’s going on
By the time when you’re feeling lost and lonely
I’ll be gone, gone, gone
Whenever I wanted some understanding
Whenever I wanted to feel unbound
Whenever I wanted just to be wanted
You only wanted to keep me down
By the time you’ll be getting ‘round to reading this
By the time you might know what’s going on
By the time when you’re feeling lost and lonely
I’ll be gone, gone, gone
Whatever it was, dear, that drew me to you
Whatever I felt that I thought was love
Whatever it was that kept us together
Died on the vine – wasn’t enough
By the time you’ll be getting ‘round to reading this
By the time you might know what’s going on
By the time when you’re feeling lost and lonely
I’ll be gone, gone, gone
Don’t try to find a hidden meaning
Don’t try to read between the lines
Don’t bother asking to talk it over
I’ve begged you a thousand times
By the time you’ll be getting ‘round to reading this
By the time you might know what’s going on
By the time when you’re feeling lost and lonely
I’ll be gone, gone, gone
I’m moving on
Now I’m gone, gone, gone
About:
Uplifting Prague’s Rock Scene with Heartfelt Hope
George Collins is a transatlantic storyteller based in Prague and Key West. His writing brings soulful flair to the worlds of rock music, novels, and television!
In his first music career, it has been joked that Collins was in the Dave Matthews Band before Dave Matthews. Back then, he played lead guitar in Common Knowledge, a Charlottesville, Virginia-based, Earth, Wind & Fire-esque band featuring DMB founding members, drummer and backing vocalist Carter Beauford, and the late saxophonist LeRoi Moore. Eventually, Collins evolved into a singer-songwriter, and he put himself through graduate school performing three nights a week in local clubs.
In 2012, at the age of 50, now based in Prague, Czech Republic, Collins had his first child, and he made the fateful decision to bow out of his very lucrative 20-year career as an investment consultant and financial executive to nurture his creative world and be a dedicated full-time parent. He jokes that he now works in the “non-profit” sector as an indie musician, writer, and stay-at-home dad. He and his wife welcomed their second child in 2015, just weeks shy of his fifty-fourth birthday.
Fast forward to 2022, when Collins released his critically-acclaimed debut solo EP, “It’s Been a Long Time,” which has since earned an international fanbase. In 2024, Collins released his sophomore EP, “Songs for Grown-ups,” which bursts with gratitude, critical introspection, and more hooks than a tackle box. This was followed by “Acoustic Versions,” stripped down recordings of fan favorites from his catalog.
These days Collins is working harder than ever, performing consistently around Prague and Key West and readying his fourth release, a full-length 14-track album titled “New Ways of Getting Old.”
Contemplating his life’s journey and where he’s at now, he says: “People sometimes ask me, ‘Are you enjoying your hobby?’ Hobby? This ain’t no hobby – it’s my passion. I’m working longer hours than when I was a partner in my investment firm, but I feel this is what I am called to do and it’s an honor and a privilege to finally get to do it.”
