Big Thief Announce Double Infinity, Return With Stirring New Single “Incomprehensible”
Big Thief has never been a band to repeat themselves, and with the announcement of their sixth studio album Double Infinity, they’re once again pushing into new emotional and sonic territory. Slated for release on September 5, 2025, via 4AD, the album marks a fresh chapter for the indie-folk stalwarts—and the first since the departure of longtime bassist Max Oleartchik.
The lead single, “Incomprehensible,” dropped alongside the album announcement, and it lands like a quiet gut punch. Adrianne Lenker, as always, cuts straight through with lines like, “In two days it’s my birthday and I’ll be 33 / That doesn’t really matter next to eternity.” It’s a meditation on time, mortality, and the strange beauty of just being—wrapped in the kind of delicate instrumentation and raw, open-sky vulnerability Big Thief has perfected.
While the band now operates as a trio—Lenker, Buck Meek, and James Krivchenia—they’ve expanded their circle with collaborators that add rich new layers to the project. Recording at NYC’s Power Station, they brought in artists like Laraaji, June McDoom, and Joshua Crumbly, giving Double Infinity the feel of a community effort, even as it leans inward.
Dom Monks returns on production duties, maintaining that blend of organic textures and subtle experimentation that helped define Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You. But where that album sprawled across 20 tracks and genres, Double Infinity seems more distilled—focused, but no less exploratory.
The band will also head out on the Somersault Slide 360 Tour this fall, kicking off September 17 in Sacramento and wrapping up in Houston on November 7. Expect the new material to land softly but heavily—like most things Big Thief does.
If “Incomprehensible” is any indication, Double Infinity isn’t just a follow-up—it’s a reset. A reminder that even after all the praise, Big Thief is still chasing something just out of reach—and taking us along for the ride.
