An Interview with BUKVE: The Sound of Melancholy and Hope

Emerging from the breathtaking landscapes of Bergen, Norway, BUKVE is an artist whose music blends indie pop with alternative rock, crafting deeply personal narratives through haunting melodies and evocative lyrics. With a debut album set to release in Spring 2024, BUKVE has already garnered attention through his singles and BBC Radio airplay. His artistic journey is one of introspection, loss, and resilience—elements that make his sound both intimate and universal. Exposed Vocals had the opportunity to sit down with BUKVE to discuss his inspirations, creative process, and the meaning behind his music.
Exposed Vocals: Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind your debut album and how the sound of BUKVE fits into the world of indie pop and alternative pop/rock?
Lyrics and tones of this album are really personal, especially on some of them. It shows my feelings, heartache, lack of hope, and the comeback of hope.
As long as I can remember, I’ve had this feeling of being different and an outsider. Even today, as a steady worker in health care and a father, I’m drawn to the feeling of not belonging and not wanting to take part in what’s expected of me. I would say it’s an everyday fight that I try to channel through music. Melancholy follows me everywhere I go when making music.
Exposed Vocals: Your collaboration with producer Stamos Koliousis is mentioned. How does this partnership contribute to the unique sound of BUKVE, and what is the creative process like when working together?
Stamos is a dear friend and key collaborator. I owe the man a lot for believing in and understanding me. I usually make a demo, where melody and lyrics are done, and then we color it together in the studio and bring in other musicians if we feel like it. We share a love of chasing the next cool sound or riff.
Exposed Vocals: The bio mentions that the visual elements of your project are inspired by your Great Grandmother’s drawings and paintings. How do these visuals complement the music, and what significance do they hold in the overall storytelling of BUKVE?
Some of them are connected really closely, like on “Let Me Go Son,” where the cover is based on a drawing of my father (who has passed away), showing him dissolving into dust. That aligns with the song’s lyrics, which speak about him telling me to let him go and me telling my son to do the same when the time comes.
Some of the drawings and paintings are just beautiful, so I wanted to give life to Great Grandma Alfhild’s work so it would continue beyond her lifetime.
Exposed Vocals: With the release of three singles and airtime on BBC Radio, how has the reception been, and what do you hope listeners take away from your music?
It’s been good, but I still haven’t been able to do many live shows. I’m planning on doing full band shows when the album drops. I hope listeners will be taken on a journey and connect with the music in a way that fits their own story and life experiences.
Exposed Vocals: The song “Gonna Get It” carries a message about giving others a chance and being generous. Can you elaborate on the themes explored in your lyrics and the messages you aim to convey through your music?
This follows me everywhere I go. People often don’t actually discuss issues; they judge before considering what others are really saying or where they’re coming from. It’s all around us.
Exposed Vocals: Your debut album is set for release in the Spring of 2024. What can listeners expect from the album, and how does it build upon the themes introduced in your singles?
It will get even more personal and intense, and there is actually a lot of synth on the album too.
Exposed Vocals: Could you share more about the creative process behind writing both the music and lyrics for your songs? How personal are the lyrics to your own experiences?
A lot of the songs are extremely personal to me. In a way, they came about in the same instant as the lyrics did. Some of them emerged all at once with the first stroke on the guitar or the first chord on the synth. I think my subconscious had already processed the song near to the finish line, and all I had to do was channel it out.
Exposed Vocals: The bio mentions that your family name originates from glaciers, rivers, and mountains. How does this connection influence your artistic identity, and do these natural elements find their way into the themes of your music?
My father’s side, and my last name BUKVE, comes from Jostedal, where there are majestic glaciers and dramatic nature all around. I take inspiration from that dramatic nature, as I feel a connection to the place.
Exposed Vocals: “Alive” was released on January 12. Can you share the significance of this particular single and how it sets the tone for the series of singles leading up to the album release?
It felt like a natural single to start the year with—a bit more on the pop side than some of the more melancholic songs that will be released later.
Exposed Vocals: As an artist from Bergen, Norway, do you feel that your geographical location influences the sound and themes of your music? How does your environment play a role in shaping the identity of BUKVE?
I’m born in Bergen, with seven mountains surrounding our little city of almost 300,000 people. I’ve never been too much into music hailing from Bergen, with some exceptions. I would say dramatic nature and surroundings have formed both me and my music, but they have also merged with huge British inspirations such as Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood’s work in Radiohead (both solo and in The Smile), Damon Albarn and Blur, David Bowie of course, and the storytelling of American artists like John Moreland, Jason Isbell, and Jeff Tweedy (Wilco). I should also mention guitarist Nels Cline from Wilco—his melody-building and innovative sound are amazing.
Closing Thoughts
BUKVE’s music is a deeply personal and emotional exploration of human struggles, from loss and melancholy to hope and resilience. His collaboration with producer Stamos Koliousis, the visual storytelling inspired by his Great Grandmother’s artwork, and the dramatic landscapes of Norway all contribute to the raw and authentic sound that defines his artistry. With his debut album on the horizon, BUKVE is set to take listeners on an evocative journey, offering a blend of alternative pop, indie rock, and synth-driven soundscapes. Keep an eye out for his upcoming live performances, and be sure to experience the depth of emotion he brings to his music.
