A Voice Silenced, A Legacy Begins: Mexican Rising Star Chuy Montana’s Debut Album Arrives Posthumously
Chuy Montana’s journey began at the border, where the melodies he crafted resonated far and wide. Busking with his guitar for captivated listeners at the Tijuana-San Ysidro crossing, Jesús Cárdenas (known as Chuy) caught the attention of JOP from Fuerza Regida. JOP’s belief in Chuy’s raw talent led to him being signed by Street Mob Records in 2023, launching Montana into the vibrant international Mexican music scene.
However, tragedy struck on February 7, 2024, when Chuy Montana was tragically murdered in Tijuana at the young age of 23. Fast forward to nearly a year and a half later, and his voice is brought back to life once more.
On a Thursday night, Street Mob Records unveiled Montana’s posthumous debut album, “No Fue Suerte.” This 11-track masterpiece features collaborations with some of the hottest names in regional Mexican music, including Fuerza Regida, Calle 24, Clave Especial, Armenta, and more. With the guidance of Street Mob, the album was meticulously crafted in close partnership with Montana’s family.
“This has been the most unique project I’ve ever worked on,” explains Cindy Gaxiola, VP of commercial affairs at Street Mob Records. “It was both challenging and rewarding. Playing the music for Chuy’s mom and seeing her emotional response was a profound experience. It’s fulfilling to know that all the emotions and hard work poured into this project can now be heard.”
The album features never-before-heard recordings that showcase the multifaceted artistry of Chuy Montana: from powerful corridos that delve into life’s harsh realities (“No Fue Suerte”), heartfelt ballads filled with emotional vulnerability (“Mamá”), to introspective tracks that highlight the creative evolution of a young artist finding his voice (“Qué Será”).
A community effort is at the core of the album, with most collaborations featuring artists from within the Street Mob Records roster who shared deep connections with Montana. Many of these collaborations were recorded posthumously over Chuy’s vocals.
Renowned hitmakers Fuerza Regida played a significant role in shaping the album. “JOP was heavily involved in the creative process,” Gaxiola reveals. “He was keen on ensuring the album was completed to perfection. He decided to feature on ‘Fama’ with Güero X and later decided to join ‘Sin Chingarme a Nadie’ during the final stages of mixing and mastering.”
The album’s direction was influenced by Montana’s friendship with Güero X. “Güero played a pivotal role in helping us navigate the music collection process,” Gaxiola notes.
Additionally, collaborations with Calle 24 and Clave Especial brought unique flavors to the album. Both groups eagerly joined the track “Cuadros Peruanos,” showcasing their musical prowess and honoring Montana’s legacy.
Songwriter Armenta became part of the project at the request of Montana’s family, contributing to the poignant track “De Tijuana a París” with his steel-string guitar expertise. The organic nature of these collaborations added a personal touch to the album.
At the heart of the album lies Montana’s ability to transport listeners into vivid emotional landscapes. His lyrics blend raw honesty with poetic imagery, with the hauntingly foretelling track “Perdón Mamá” as a standout example, featuring Juanpa Salazar and evocative accordion melodies.
“When you listen to the album, you can visualize everything that he’s singing,” Gaxiola reflects. “It’s a testament to his storytelling prowess. Even though he didn’t experience some of these tales, you can feel his deep understanding of them.”
A family member shared in a press release, “Every note, every word on this album embodies Chuy’s spirit.” For Montana’s loved ones, the completion of the album marked a moment of both honoring his work and finding solace in his artistry.
In a gesture of respect, Street Mob Records organized a private gathering for Montana’s family on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, where they had the opportunity to experience the finished album together. The trip served as a space for connection and contemplation, uniting artists, the record label team, and Montana’s relatives.
For fans, Chuy Montana’s debut album offers a poignant glimpse into the potential of a rising star whose stories transcend beyond his years. “I hope fans approach the album with an open heart,” Gaxiola expresses. “We’re eager for everyone to give this album the attention and reverence it deserves, ensuring that Chuy’s legacy endures.”
