Zenas “Shinzou” Jones Veil (Prod. By Zenas Jones) “the spoken word adds an element of reality”
The track has a great vibe and atmosphere about it from the offset. The ambiance of the musical backdrop is kept to a minimal just for that intro section, the spoken word adds an element of reality, of drama and intensity, and this contrasts well with the peaceful and dreamlike soundscape behind it.
As the track itself kicks in the melody comes across as something of a freestyle, a lyrically heavy outpouring of ideas and rhymes, not dissimilar to the classic r&b hits of the 90s. Again, the music has a calmness about it that consistently contrasts well with the quick-fire delivery of the lyrics. The leading vocal performance itself has a mellow energy, the words and the melody are offered up in a very laid back manner, yet the lines themselves provide more than enough honesty and emotion to keep things very real.
The unforgiving nature of the melody makes it a little difficult at first to find a particular line or hook to cling on to or to familiarise yourself with, but it definitely makes the song quite unique and interesting. The more you listen, the more the whole thing takes shape as its own work of art – the expression is consistent, as is the style and the musicality and the production. The music in fact strikes mostly as this hypnotic, all encompassing, audio experience; rather than merely another pop song to sing along to. To listen more than once is to really get your head around those words, and there is so much there to hear, and actually, most of it has a really fresh and unusual substance. The subject matter is easy to relate to for most, hiding your true feelings, drinking, doubting, etc. Yet the way in which it’s expressed is unquestionably original, and this holds great appeal.
