Within Shadows put out a great kind of energy with their musicianship. The opening riff has the thickness and feeling of a classic rock hit, and the production is pretty intricate and effective so as to really bring out the best in the instrumentation. The leading vocal has an unusual sound to it, there’s a softness in amongst the rock-inspired croak, and the lyrics are almost spoken at times, rather than sung.
The melody of the track is a little unexpected alongside the musical backdrop, and the unusual nature of the voice does make it a little difficult to follow the melody line and absorb the overall sound of the song. What you take away from the track is the high energy of the guitars, the drums, and the character of that leading voice, rather than some hugely memorable hook or chorus. This makes for something different, for certain, something unpredictable and new.
The melody doesn’t quite seem to reach the heights that huge songs of this style often do as a means of capturing and holding on to their audience’s attention. Having said that though, the song is really well structured, with a subject matter that is easy to relate to, and, as mentioned, the great energy of the piece and the unique character that is presented with the leading vocal, all work towards something alternative. There’s actually a folk-rock element to the sound at times, which really seems to work well. They are indeed a well-rehearsed and passionate band, regardless, and hopefully there is more music to look out for.
