“soaked in emotion and surrounded by space” Black Night Revival – This Fire
The track opens up with a great guitar riff, a gentle sound soaked in emotion and surrounded by space so as to draw listeners to the lyrics and the feeling behind it all. The music soon builds up and evolves into a heavier bit of melodic indie-rock. The energy lifts, the leading vocal rises in intensity, as do the surrounding instruments, and the build-up works – the track has the classic sound of early melodic rock.
The whole ‘breathe with your mouth open’ concept within the lyrics is really unusual and quite striking. The sound and melody of the track has a comforting familiarity about it, but the lyrics are undoubtedly something fresh and quirky. The perspective is fairly poetic, reflective, and original. It adds a lot to the sound to be able to appreciate the ideas and emotions behind the making of the music. If at first it takes a little time to appreciate the track as something new, when you do, there’s a lot to like about it.
The music follows a structure that works, and the musicians involved play well – everything builds up, falls away, reflects the emotion and the intensity appropriately right the way through. Furthermore, the track leaves it’s chorus lingering in your mind, and this is in part due to the changing intensity – this has been really effectively executed by the band, and it makes a big difference. It also suggests and brings appeal to the idea that a live show would be an unmissable experience.
It would be enjoyable to follow the band further and check out alternate releases or longer projects; there’s unquestionably something about their creative energy and their writing style that stands out. Great lyrics and a captivating sense of progression within the music make this work well.
