[Review] Thonio – The Cook Up “soaked in a very classic r&b-meets-hip-hop energy”
Being From Little Rock Ark, This Southern artist is not your average southern artist he creates in all different styles, arts & genres of music. Thonio’s creative process is as organic as they come, he doesn’t Box himself into to a specific sound … he doesn’t judge or stress about what others think of what he is creating if he likes the sound of it he runs with it period. his music is completely based on emotions & situations very often it is life & experience motivated. Thonio captures what he goes through on a day to day basis, Weather it be a great movie, good or bad life experiences they are all captured in his sound …. but he actually does border on the lines of insanity & fantasy having a hard & terrible child hood growing up Thonio escapes from those thoughts & memories by creating music. Thonio spends a massive amount of time imagining a place better than his childhood was or even imagining himself somewhere different than his present & current reality … Grab a seat & Hang on because the ride twist, turns, goes up down & around you never know what you may hear … Just enjoy the sounds …
The Cook Up
The musicality of this track is great, so smooth and loaded with laid back, easy going good vibes. As the song enfolds the melody feeds further into the ambiance and presents listeners with a memorable tune and a gorgeously expressive and stylish leading vocal, similarly mellow so as to maintain that initial energy. The beat is simple yet creatively crafted and works well to set and maintain this desirable mood. As things progress, the rap vocal brings the passion and adds a touch of volume and energy – creating a well placed and interesting contrast with everything prior to and surrounding it.
At less than three minutes long the track feels like it could go on a lot longer. The beat comes into play slowly, the guitar sound is delicate and minimalist, the sung vocal is smooth and beautiful to listen to, and there’s a likeable level of swagger to the sound and to the lyrics. The track’s overall concept has that same swagger and makes for a memorable title and leading melody. The track feels fresh and works well as an end of summer, go-to release to simply turn up and escape to. At the same time, the whole thing is soaked in a very classic r&b-meets-hip-hop energy, not dissimilar to the melodic and smooth sound of the nineties. The freshness speaks volumes though and what’s works so well about it is that the whole thing doesn’t try to be anything more than the art that it needs to be. The humble nature of the song – its length, the instrumentation, the calming soundscape in general – all adds to the appeal and value of the release. Without a doubt, on hearing this single release most listeners will look to discover more music from the artist behind it.
