[Review] Magnum Font – Rap Soldier “his most atmospheric musical presence yet”
Another new and improved backing track and hook from lyricist and artist The Magnum Font. ‘Rap Soldier’ features perhaps his most atmospheric musical presence yet, the beat and the surrounding instrumentation working in unison to create a dramatic and dark ambiance that moves around you in a rhythmically powerful way.
What’s notable about this release as well is that it opens up with the hook, the central force is presented straight away – the full heat of the music, the key concept, the rhythm of those all important lines. From here on in the verses come through as that classic, spoken word style of songwriting that the creative always offers up. In this case, the verses again present some extended and well thought out ideas and examples of clever wordplay. The consideration that goes into some of these lines is really quite striking, his development of a particular theme or scene showcases distinct attention to detail. There’s a hint of him wondering when he’ll run out of inspiration, but by the sound of these views of the world and the thought process behind presenting them in a poetic and rhythmic manner, the ongoing, every day life is likely to continue to motivate and drive his creativity.
The more you hear from The Magnum Font, the more that character and passion comes through, and these varying musical backdrops each bring forth new elements of both. ‘Rap Soldier’ features intense energy and story telling, with all of the above – the reflective nature of the writing, the long and thought out metaphors and references, the attitude. The hook is definitely one of his most memorable yet, and always the honesty of the lines arrives unapologetically, with intent and personal realness, and rightfully so.
