[Review] DJ Soundz – Restless “an uplifting and memorable piece of music.”
The meeting of the blissful piano and the distorted, industrial sounding synth on this release makes for a unique and characterful track. The sense of melody is quite notable, the way in which the piece evolves has the occasional feeling of being several tracks in one, particularly towards the latter half of the recording when the instrumentation seems to breakaway from the otherwise unified ambiance and each moment possesses a mind of its own. All of this makes for a striking audio experience, and as stated, it adds a characterful touch that gives the producer this signature style, this expressive and experimental approach to music.
The title of the release ties in with the energy of the music brilliantly. There is a partly calming feel to the backdrop at times, but the consistent level of change, and that distortion, that additional, manic presence – the riffs, the effects, this whirlpool of sounds – all work to create something notably restless. The effect of this is that the feeling passes on to you as you listen. And yet every so often, when the thickness falls away, you’re left with these moments of space, almost silence, where the piano part is laid bare, or the synth, or the beat. Later on, this retro synth-heavy bass line flickers, seeing through the final few seconds of music with a further touch of personality.
Rather than a specifically directed composition, the artist has presented audiences with something deeply creative, something that takes a touch of inspiration and energy from various different genres and moods. The piano part is inspired and with this comes a level of realness, of human emotion, then alongside it there is the electronic element of sound design. The overall result of it all is an uplifting and memorable piece of music.
