[Review] Alpha Batty – Casanova “unafraid to compose and craft something new.”
‘Casanova’ presents audiences with a fairly unique and unusual soundscape upon which a fitting, equally dark and haunting vocal performance unfolds and expresses the key sentiments of the song. The music is unusual in a number of ways, though at it’s core the classic hip-hop influence is clear – the simplistic repetition of a particular riff, memorable and effective, the thick and mellow beat, plus a touch of all else creatively free to really sharpen up those musical edges. The essence of hip-hop is there, but it’s refreshing to hear it presented in a way that challenges the norm and is unafraid to compose and craft something new.
From a songwriting perspective the hook is the main idea you’re left with after listening, aside from the intense and characterful musicality. The leading artist’s voice has a certain tone and accompanying performance style that presents a very mellow and relaxed sort of mood. The traditional perception of Casanova is challenged throughout, by every element that enters the space. If not challenged, definitely the darker or alternative version of the story is touched upon. The sense of character inherent in this track fits the concept well. The artist’s flow, as well as the sound of the voice itself, has this unorthodox pattern to it that seems part modern part free from influence, again showcasing an artist following his own path.
Besides being wonderful, lyrically -the verses offer a touch of storytelling and this comes across as fairly personal and genuine for the most part. The music more than fills in any gaps and leaves listeners with that all important memorable moment that will, hopefully, bring them back for more.
