Many of the things I’ve seen since visiting Haiti last year were expected. I expected to wake to the sound of roosters. I expected horrible traffic. I even expected the disheartening tents that dot busy intersections. But I never expected I’d be traveling down the street one day and see a “tap tap” (Haitian bus) displaying along one side a painted shrine to T. I., an Atlanta-based rapper.
Nobody can doubt that the Haitian people are survivors. Far less certain is whether Haitian music can survive the invasion of American hip-hop.
Over the past five years, we at Exposed Vocals have seen a vast improvement within the Haitian music scene, and it’s mainly due to the success and the elevation of the American music scene. Especially, in EDM kreyol, a relatively new genre that mixes the beats and styles of American Electronica with traditional Haitian music and the Creole language. But as the music has grown in popularity, some Haitians are asking whether EDM kreyol is a true fusion — or just an imitation of the American house music that’s becoming so popular in Haiti.
SO, let’s talk about Natalie Jean and her award winning Red Room Remix track. Natalie Jean is the untouchable genius who’s gone beyond taking the electronic dance music scene by storm. Ultimately, it is an upbeat dance song that could become popular in the clubs, but it’s also just enjoyable to listen to due to its infectious beat. It’s somewhere between trance and house, with a high synth melody working in tandem with the bassline.
Overall, this is not only and excellent remix, but an inspiring track that blends several musical styles in an inventive way.
