Recent interview with Double C – talks performing with J. Cole
Exposed Vocals: How did you hear about Exposed Vocals? What made you decide to sign up?
Double C: I first heard about Exposed Vocals online. I heard about them on twitter so I decided to follow them and discover more about what they do.
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Double C: Actually Double C is a music trio consisting of members A-stylla, Wass Dachez and Mystaritchy. We are born in raised in the not so leafy suburbs of Nairobi-Kenya. We all kicked off our music careers as solo artists until June 2014. We met as a result of a cipher that was organized by a producer we were all working with at the time. After the cipher the three of us decided to come together and work a track titled “Never get your shine” which made us come to the realization that we had to work as a group due to our different styles and of rap.
We decided to do rap music out of passion and love of music. We were getting a lot of motivation and push from some of our friends to do music during rap sessions in our neighborhoods. This encouraged going to studio and doing some recordings out of which we got some pretty positive feedback.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Double C: Double C is an acronym for Crazy Combination. I can’t really say there’s some inspiration behind it it’s only that we rap differently so when you put the three of on the same track that combination is just crazy. At least that’s from a fans point of view. So I guess that’s how our stage name was born.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Double C: Online music sharing exposes you to new fans on a world wide scale at a lesser cost as opposed to the traditional way of performing at gigs which comes by rarely. As an upcoming artist you will definitely give away music for free so we have done that. Reason for that being people really don’t know us so by giving them for free we are introducing ourselves.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Double C: Start small be consistent. Always have something for your fans. Be it a live performance recording, a studio session, interview, etc. Have them updated on what you are up to.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Double C: Mistakes are always there. Most of the time the crowd is usually hyped to even notice and incase it happens since we are rappers we just throw in a freestyle and get crowd moving.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
Double C: We haven’t really had a major tour. Just gigs in our city. But sometimes we tend to have last minute disagreements on payment or rider.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Double C: We gather at any of our members crib. Depending on the subject our song writing process can be initiated from a rhythm- which leads to hook or chorus and then go to the studio with the idea to make a beat and later write verses to the song. Sometimes we just a listen to a series of tracks and pick ones we like and then go build a subject and song around the beat.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
Double C: Currently we just have a blog http://doublec254.wordpress.com. We have a new website that is currently under development. We are currently showcasing our tunes via Sound Cloud and Mdundo (a local online music distribution website)
Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?
Double C: None. We are quite selective on the music we listen to.
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
Double C: I think most of it will go to charity. That’s something we have been involved since we kicked off our music career. But now we will do it on a larger scale.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
Double C: We want to have a bigger outreach. That can only be made possible if we work with bigger record labels as this will give us the exposure of working with other bigger artists. Currently we are under ATL Entertainment Records.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Double C: Online on social media. But we would prefer radio and tv.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
Double C: Madison Square- New York with J. Cole.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Double C: Yeah, we are dropping a new video to the song “Kirazy Kombination” this late this month. So watch out for it.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Double C: To be honest it’s hard to tell when music is the only thing you got.
Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?
Double C: J. Cole’s Cole World. Sometime in 2012, based on recommendations from some of my music friends I knew it had to be worth it.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
Double C: Its hard but with efficient time management its possible.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
Double C: We are planning to drop our first album yet to be titled. And also try our best to do a country wide tour.
