“raw emotion and energy” MrZachTrahan – Unbroken
The track has a very inspirational sounding backdrop, the music has the sound of something big and powerful – the strings and the choir-like sound filling out the space around the leading vocal. The leading vocal itself is the main identity of the track, the artist has a certain sound and style specific to his own artistry. The flow of the rap performance varies and evolves throughout, the energy and the pace picks up accordingly as the intensity of the whole piece builds. The opening verses leave a little to be desired, perhaps because the flow is so much more mellow in these early stages, there’s a little too much room around the lyrics so you’re left really focusing too much on each individual line, the counting of the punches included. However, there’s so much passion to the performance, and that’s a big selling point for independent music – that’s the kind of thing people often relate to and understand and seek out.
The hook works well on some levels as it fits in with the rhythm of the music and the vibe of the ambiance really well. The accompanying video is quite minimal so this too represents the raw emotion and energy of the whole track. It’s not a hugely memorable hook, or rather it is, but it’s not the sort that gets caught in your mind – a little extra change in instrumentation might have helped fill it out more. Without a doubt, the music and the performance have a stamp of identity about them, the artist’s voice is unique and the story and the rhyme scheme all suggest something new. The passion is consistent and in fact builds and builds throughout, so this works well alongside the somewhat epic sound of the strings and the strength of the backing music in general.
