Opeth Unveils Their New Concept Album The Last Will And Testament
Swedish progressive metal maestros Opeth are set to captivate fans with their highly anticipated new album, The Last Will And Testament, scheduled for release on October 11 via Moderbolaget/Reigning Phoenix Music. This remarkable record promises to be a landmark in the band’s illustrious discography.
Set against the hauntingly atmospheric backdrop of post-WWI, The Last Will And Testament is a concept album that delves deep into a family’s unraveling as they confront the reading of a late father’s will. The album unveils shocking family secrets and explores the profound impact these revelations have on his twin children, intertwined with the story of a mysterious, polio-ridden orphaned girl.
This album features a stellar lineup of guest artists including Jethro Tull’s iconic Ian Anderson, Europe’s legendary frontman Joey Tempest, and Mikael Åkerfeldt’s youngest daughter, Mirjam. Their contributions add a unique layer of depth and diversity to the album, ensuring a fresh yet distinctly Opeth experience.
Mikael Åkerfeldt himself exclaims, “I love this record. It feels like a dream. We’ve brought some familiar ingredients into play, but I believe there’s something truly special about this project. Don’t expect an instant rush, but if you get it right away, that’s perfectly fine too!”
The Last Will And Testament introduces Finnish drummer Waltteri Väyrynen, known for his work with Paradise Lost and Bodom After Midnight. His drumming, described by Åkerfeldt as “otherworldly,” brings a new energy to the band’s sound. The album was recorded at Rockfield Studios and mixed by Stefan Boman, with mastering by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios. The striking cover artwork by Travis Smith evokes an eerie atmosphere reminiscent of The Shining’s Overlook Hotel, perfectly complementing the album’s thematic elements.
Fans who pre-order the album will receive an exclusive ticket pre-sale code for Opeth’s European tour, with general ticket sales opening on August 9. Don’t miss this chance to experience Opeth’s new musical odyssey live.
