Music Review – Psycho Melodic Kill Switch – Melody Switch
An intriguing band name and background story draws you in before you even hear the music sometimes. The song ‘Melody Switch’ is actually nothing like I’d imagined when I read about the band, the music is highly driven by that melodic mention – the melodies throughout the track are brilliantly effective. It’s endearing, and it wraps it’s sound and it’s lyrics around you in a way that makes you want to learn every word. A really strong indie track, a live sounding production to it makes it all the more attractive and raw.
It was almost impossible to focus on the lyrics the first time around, the music and the melody are so bright sounding that all else falls behind a little. It took a few listens to get to grips with the concept of this character, later wondering whether or not Melody Switch is based on a real person. She’s a good catholic girl with black hooker boots, a rarity if real, hopefully based on truth though – I think indie music is so much more effective and memorable if there is truth in the lyrics. This is indeed a band who write songs out of their own experiences and frustrations, so I suspect there is a huge element of authenticity and truth in their songs.
The music behind this story and this melody has a fairly classic indie rock feel to it, a live sound almost, as mentioned earlier, but the doubled vocals and the distortion add a heavier and more room filling kind of sound to the whole thing. It sounds great, I can hear it coming on during the later drunken hours of a rock pub gig or event, or even just an average Friday night. It feels familiar to me already, which is important, effective song writing – I’ll remember the track, the sound, the lyrics in particular – that descriptive element, that storytelling, is extremely unique. I’ll know it’s Psycho Melodic Kill Switch the moment the music starts to play. It’s a one of a kind sound they’ve achieved, I look forward to hearing more from them.
