Music Review – Mirko Filacchioni – My Hero
Mirko Filacchioni is an Italian guitarist and songwriter who has has just released an instrumental EP of rock-inspired music, entitled “In Guitar We Trust”. The project shows him fusing his guitar skills with a range of oriental instruments and brass.
My Hero is a brand new track from this EP. It’s a brilliant example of creative energy and skill. The beat and the whole backdrop to his guitar playing is almost like that of a classic 80’s action film, the drama and intensity of it; it’s really nice to hear the creativity of a guitarist being focused into different areas of music and expression. The guitar playing itself is equally compelling, it’s somehow a combination of beauty and distortion, a heart meeting head kind of thing, the clouds meet the gravel, softness meets strength.
Really great vibes are set with this music, it allows the thought process to run wild as you listen, almost painting a picture for you, or laying down the path for you to walk along and paint your own. There isn’t enough of this kind of experimental instrumentation in the world lately, it’s a pleasure to hear someone letting their creativity do the talking.
My only negative was that I felt like the track perhaps finished a little too soon. The amazing thing about instrumental music is that there is no recommended structure, no rules for when to start or when to finish. Granted, it is far better to finish too soon than to carry on for far too long, but I felt there was a little left of the story and the emotion to express. A switch up in mood, a dramatic interlude, or a soft and gentle breakaway from the norm, then back to the track with a boom. Something like this, but it sounds great regardless – the playing is superb, and the beat was a real strong point – an unexpected rhythm that seduces you and makes you want to get up and do something important, with lots of passion. Very powerful music.
