Music Review for “She is the Universe” – by post-rock band from Moscow ‘Siberia’
Siberia* – post-rock band from Moscow, Russia, formed in 2012.The group consists of 5 people: Sergey Shirenin (bass), Denis Davidov (drums), Nikolay Orlov (lead guitar), Alexey Korolev (guitar), Anton Vinnik (guitar). Siberia* is a musical alliance of people who are united by love of music, all manifestations of the world surrounding us, and by everything that is beyond its limits.
The band went through long searches of their own sound which was finally justified when their debut album “Kaleidoscope” was released at 21st of April 2015. Shortly after the release the song called “Forest Cowboys” from this album was featured by russian national FM radio station “Rock FM’. On this album the band showed a wide spectrum of sound which was studied within several years past. Experimenting in different genres of instrumental music, they created powerfull post-metal compositions wrapped around placatory ambient elements and melodies reflecting the real human happiness which, they hope, will inevitably switch on light lodge hope in each needing soul.
“She is the Universe” Music review
Siberia are a five-piece experimental post-rock group, hailing from Moscow. They described themselves as a musical alliance of people united by their love of music. Their sound could be compared to other alternative groups like Sigur Ros or the British groups of the shoegaze movement such as My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins.
She Is The Universe is a slow building, atmospheric instrumental that opens with evocative, echoing guitars playing melodies that intertwine seamlessly. Gradually, a more precise high-end guitar riff begins leading to the entry of an enormous drum sound. The drum pattern is complex to start with, then simplifies for the next section.
Around halfway through its five-minute duration, the guitars, playing simple low-end melodies combined with trailing, ascending high-end riffs, start building to a climax. The tension increases and the drums enter into a snare roll in the last minute, which is all the more effective due to the gradually building momentum of the music. The effect is euphoric and the superb use of reverb creates a cavernous and mighty sound.
Overall, this is a beautifully constructed, performed and produced piece of music from a band who have mastered their craft and fully realized their musical vision. Whilst a five-minute rock instrumental won’t be topping any charts, Siberia are exploring much more interesting musical territory than what you will come across in the mainstream. I highly recommend you experience their crystalline and haunting soundscapes.
