Music Review for Sara James – Boys Like You
Another massively powerful pop song from Sara James, this one opens with a stunning classic rock guitar riff, then soon her softly unique vocal weaving these melodies out around it. The beat is brilliant, it feels like the start of a race, you’re drawn into the music by the sheer bass of it, plus the quickness of the lyrics, leading up to that inescapably catchy chorus section – it’s nice to hear a chorus that’s slower than the verses, if it’s done effectively, which it is; you find yourself craving this part when you listen to the next verse. It’s one I can imagine a crowd of fans eagerly awaiting and then singing along to passionately. The lyrics have that wonderfully unusual nature to them, these aren’t lines you’ve heard anywhere else, so it’s like a brand new yet classic pop-rock song; a lot of good things all at once.
I’m a huge fan of the smooth and mellow guitar solo section, it has this descending, quite haunting style to it, combined with the vocal lightly doused in just enough reverb makes this a real moment within the song. Occasionally I thought maybe a little fusion of those slower sections with the quicker ones from earlier – towards the very end, as the chorus and the music build and build to break away, there could have been even more of that manic, hectic, climactic meeting of sounds – but that’s a personal final mix preference I think. Sara James is a wonderful artist, everything I’ve heard so far has originality, honesty, and style written all over it. So much character comes through within the songs and the performance, and that’s a fantastic thing to have as artist, definitely something to hold on to. Make sure you give her a follow online to look out for upcoming releases and live shows.
