Music Review for Miranda Writes – HipHop PSA
This is a track that reaches out to the people of today, raising a flag for certain ideas that shouldn’t be ignored. ‘All human beings are born free and equal.’ The video has some quite striking imagery to accompany this theme, with a flicker of ideas from V For Vendetta, a memorable cult hit – known for this mask of anonymity. There is a recorded voice playing at certain times, a classic sounding American announcement, implied as part of a public forum, ‘The universal declaration of human rights’, so from the very start you know that this will mean something – this will be something worth listening to for it’s lyricism and it’s concept.
The music itself has a really intense riff running pretty consistently throughout the backdrop, reminiscent a little of the one used in Awolnation’s ‘Sail’ – it has that manic urgency about it, which quickly grabs your attention. The vocal performance on top of this has a lot of passion and confidence, but it’s not overly aggressive or shouty – as some politically driven raps can be. The point is made by this confidence, this stylish delivery, which sounds mellow yet serious alongside that striking riff. Together these elements create something that you can sit back and vibe to, whilst also listening intently, and contemplating the words and the ideas.
Music that makes you think more deeply about life and the issues around you, the issues facing certain people, certain parts of the world – this kind of music always has a place. The power to reach a wider audience by appealing to them with entertainment and music is unstoppable when done properly. That’s when you can say something that matters, and it won’t go unnoticed. ‘We must protect our sisters and brothers’. It’s a great piece of music, it sounds meaningful, and at the same time it’s quite easy to chill out to.
