Music Review for Mellotonin – Creative Space
Miles Saunders… Mello Miles, one half of Mellotonin, 19 years old. Born in Baltimore, Maryland and moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in 2006. Miles has been writing since the age of 8, composing raps, poetry and stories. Until a year ago, Miles has had to push his true passion aside for sports. He played football and swam since the age of 6 and throughout high school. After graduating high school, Miles attended Queens University of Charlotte to swim. In his freshman year, he was a member of the National Championship team and elected to leave his sophomore year to pursue his real passion, writing. Miles is currently putting the finishing touches on a project with his sister, who’s a DJ. They are planning to release it this summer, all while juggling school.
Madison Saunders… Dj Lo~Easy, the other half of Mellotonin, 17 years old. Born in Baltimore, MD and moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in 2006. Madison followed the footsteps of her brother by swimming her freshman year of high school. Always having a love of music but not knowing where she could fit in she decided to deejay and dance. Madison will be graduating high school this coming June and has decided to end her swim career and focus solely on music. She has been busy working on Mellotonin’s upcoming project with her brother, mixing and adding effects to the instrumentals used on the mixtape.
Music Review for Creative Space
The title of this track is pretty immensely accurate for the kind of mood and atmosphere that the music and the vocals give off throughout. A really well executed concept, and fantastic production that just makes every sound and every effect and every moment so crisp and stylish. There’s a smoothness to the whole thing, a relaxed ambience, but with enough edge to make it feel like a real, finished piece of work – a piece of art, inspired, and inspiring to those who listen.
One of the best things about this track is the way the vocal sits among the music and the sound scape. The vocal, particularly during that intro, seems to be right there in the room with you – listening to the music, or making it, and talking right alongside you. The music that follows is brilliantly creative, which makes the title so powerfully relevant, and then beside it you get this very specific vocal rhythm, a mellow yet quite unusual flow, the effect of which really just adds to that uniqueness that the whole thing exudes right the way through.
The music stops and starts now and then, which is always interesting to hear – produced or mixed by someone with their own creative edge and flair, so there is always something new and experimental being added to the recipe at every stage. A little more of this might have worked even further, the harmonies are beautiful, and hold a lot of strength, but it’s clear right from the start – maybe more of a build up to it would shine that light even brighter. But, then, it wouldn’t have the same relaxed feeling to it, which is a huge part of it’s appeal. Being in the zone is highlighted at all times, and the music expressed makes you feel like you’re in the same place, so in that respect it works perfectly. It’s a really original track, definitely one for the good vibes play list.
