Music Review for ‘Get Back’ by Cakeboycheez
This track sets out to be that big night out anthem, that fast paced, hard hitting hip-hop track that gets people moving and repeating the hook. It does what it aims to do, it fills the room with a big beat, a fairly minimal back drop, actually, though it sounds massive – the strength in the vocal performances adds a huge element of volume to the mix. There’s a lot about the track that is reminiscent of many of the bigger gangster rap type hits, there’s no melody or memorable riff, but that’s not what you look for in this kind of music. The structure is really effective; when you think you know the deal, it all gets switched up a notch, or calms down a little; the varying voices keep the vibe fresh and interesting. The hook is inescapably repetitive, but it fits well over the beat, and it’s the kind of thing fans of the artists will be craving – it stands out enough to be left in your mind when everything is said and done.
Back to that structure a little, there is actually a fair amount of creativity involved in this. It’s a longer piece of music than expected, but it plays out like a movie scene – everyone has their moment, everyone gets their say, and then for that all important hook line the whole unit works together, adding to the power of the sound. The synths in the backdrop are highlighted a little more intensely as the song fades out, so you do hear a bit of that production shining through, you hear a bit of a riff that could maybe have been brought forward in the mix slightly, to add to the dance effect. It would definitely be interesting to hear a few different remixes of the same track, with various elements switched up and down.
