Mark Jones – Know About Me “the flow and the lyricism and the honesty all make for something worthwhile”
The track has a pretty unique musicality to it, the sound seems to take inspiration and even samples from the world of electronic music – the synths, the tripped up beat, the distant riffs and vocal melodies filling out the space around the lyrics. In essence though, the song is hip-hop – focused on the self, story telling based on personal experiences, an expression of inner efforts to be heard and to reach certain milestones in life.
The rap flow once it kicks in actually has a great energy, the leading vocal has a certain style and tone to it that feels fairly original. The hook section is pretty compelling as the verse sections, for this reason primarily – the verses allow listeners to get an insight as to who the lyricist is and what the words are all about. The hook has the repetition and rhythm required to make it sink in, and it’s definitely something of a relief when the verses come into play – the flow and the lyricism and the honesty all make for something worthwhile.
As mentioned, there’s a sense of character to it all that holds great appeal. The experimental angle the music has taken adds to this sense of character, and it makes the track float somewhere between genres, which is always valuable these days and really helps certain works stand out from their peers. The rap flow gets a little intense as the track progresses, there’s very little room within which to accept and reflect what’s been said, but intensity is sometimes a relevant element when there’s a clear degree of passion involved in something. The creativity reflects the desire of the artist and the intention when making this song, and so it’s a fair representation in this sense.
