King Baba James – Dreams “a beautifully ambient soundscape”
The musical backdrop to this song is simple and effective, it creates a beautifully ambient soundscape within which the ideas presented by the songwriter can really shine brightly. There are a lot of inspiring thoughts put out by the lyrics, the optimism and hopefulness is strong and that’s always important. It’s also interesting to hear this fusion of genres, the style presented on the whole has something both nostalgic and fresh about it – there’s a little bit of an ambient, trip-hop kind of mood, but the vocal melody and the backing vocals in addition offer something a little bit different.

Some of the lyrics are great, they stretch beyond what’s expected and encourage you to be whatever you want to be – whether it’s a lawyer, a doctor, or even President – the possibilities are seemingly endless. It’s a pleasure to listen to such positivity and enthusiasm. The whole thing falls in the motivational music category for sure.
The leading voice has a lot of character to it and undoubtedly a lot of passion, this is clear from start to finish. The wash of reverb used on the voice fits well within the soundscape and helps balance the levels a little better so that it all just works as a complete recording. The vocal performance seems to struggle a little on occasion, but again that inherent passion is what drives it and this is something that adds a very genuine touch of humanity to the song and it’s concept. The title of the song is simple and effective and the overall mood and effect of the piece ties in well with the idea of dreaming and the peacefulness that dreams can bring to us, particularly when we’ve worked hard to make them a reality.
