K The Great – For Us [Music Review]
K The Great speaks truth to power on the insightful “For Us”. Done with such care, the flows have a fiery spirit to them. Lyrics focus upon the ways that society values the wrong things, guns over education, and how it isolates people. Much of the way of life becomes one that feels so lonely, the inability to rise above from one’s own circumstances. A multifaceted approach to storytelling occurs, one that grows ever larger with every passing verse. Indeed, the message is one that feels so familiar: the way that the world refuses to acknowledge the up and comers, instead choosing to privilege those who don’t need any more privilege.
A thoughtful sample introduces the track. The way that the sample cuts to the bone helps to set the tone. When the dusty piano melody takes hold, it helps to guide the track along. Drums have a loose, almost jazz-like quality to them though they are clearly rooted in a hip-hop culture. Layers are brought into the field of vision, allowing for a virtual kaleidoscopic kind of style, one that embraces a sense of true creativity. Akin to a thoughtful series of reflections, K The Great does not offer any clear answer, but through contemplation allows the listener to reach their own enlightenment.
With “For Us” K The Great contemplates what has lead the world to this moment, the way it disregards its own future while obsessing over the present.
