The Introverts are something of a breath of fresh air to listen to.
The Introverts are something of a breath of fresh air to listen to. They bring a very authentic rock sound to the table, and this authenticity comes forward through every element – from the opening riff, with just the right amount of distortion, and just enough character to draw you in, to the soft yet somewhat angsty leading vocal. The leading vocal is a voice that sounds effortless, yet stylish, and it comes with that all important crackle of genuine character; delivering the songs in a superbly accessible way.
‘Smile’ is a fantastic song. The band have taken the simplicity of song writing and fused it with a raw and honest rock edge, so the result is something catchy and addictive, yet creatively free and new. The word effortless comes to mind again – it seems like something that just came to the band, through a love of music, a love of writing and jamming, as opposed to something that was forced out to try to please a waiting audience.
The way the song has been structured means that you’re constantly kept on your toes. There’s a nostalgic feeling given off by the sound in general, but you can’t get complacent. The increase in speed and urgency part way through the song is a completely unexpected bridge of sorts, yet it fits brilliantly – it’s a huge part of what takes this song to a level way above the average indie rock songs of recent years. That creative freedom is hugely important. Amongst other things, it’s the moment at which you can imagine the entire crowd jumping up and going wild at live show. The band also bring things back down to mellow impressively; there’s no uncomfortable switch, there’s no awkwardness, it just leaves you feeling really good – like something awesome has just happened.
