Interview with Actor / Musician Philip Murray Warson as he releases his new single “Wilderness Blues”
‘Wilderness Blues’ is the title track from the upcoming EP by musician / songwriter Philip Murray Warson, featuring former Dexy’s Midnight Runner and acclaimed folk musician, Helen O’Hara on the violin.
The 27 year-old gained attention with a series of tracks released online over the last year and a half. His own output started initially as an outlet and a calling card for his work as a performer and bandleader, which has seen him work on productions by the National Theatre, at the Old Vic and in the West End, and as a touring and session musician. However, he has started to gain considerable acclaim in his own right. After initial airplay on BBC Introducing, he caught the eye of Whispering Bob Harris, who invited him to play a live session for his ‘Under The Apple Tree’ series. Subsequent tracks have had the support of Mark Radcliffe on his BBC Radio 2 Folk Show
The EP again saw a return to Soup Studios largely analogue facility in East London (Treetop Flyers, ’Allo Darlin’, Johnny Flynn, Wave Pictures, The Kills, among others) to reach further beyond the folk cannon into the depths of Americana, classic rhythm and blues, and at times towards progressive rock.
The recordings demonstrate Warson’s musicality and aptitude as a producer and arranger, not least through the ethereal string arrangements played by O’Hara on the title track. They also feature some impressive performances from Greg Holme on steel guitar, rhythm section Billy Stookes and Pete Thomas, and Treetop Flyer Sam Beer sitting in on Electric Piano, as well as Warson himself switching between electric and acoustic guitars, organ and piano.
It makes for a striking depth of palate across three tracks and a very assured recording from an independent artist.
